Such a good series!!! I remember discovering it by accident back when it originally premiered on PBS years ago, and despite being in the middle of the series and having to work incredibly hard to figure things out mid-stream, I was hooked. When the final episode aired I was very sick (could hardly keep my eyes open), but I couldn't not see how it ended!

That there will probably be other batches after this (it's so LONG!), but I wanted at least to get these ones up and public for all to share. ;)

olde_fashioned: (Waterhouse -- Psyche)
John William Waterhouse, has been one of my absolute favourite artists ever since I learned of his existence. He needs no preamble, and this time around I've gone for a much simpler approach, to better allow the beauty of the original works to do all the talking. ;)

I've preserved the title of the each painting in the URL and file names.

olde_fashioned: (P&P3 -- Lizzy letter reading)
This was unbelievably fun...I knew it would be, but it surpassed even my expectations. ;)

The lovely and creatively talented [livejournal.com profile] winterlillies was kind enough to shepherd me in my very first icon battle!

We both picked 15 images each and exchanged our images for a total of 30 images resulting in 30 icons. The first 15 images were chosen by me and the last 15 by her. (The gorgeous header is also by her!)

One of my very favourite movies, and definitely one of the best set in the 18th century, it's also one of the few movies that's able to boast of being better than the original novel. Plus with gorgeous scenery and such a great soundtrack, you really can't go wrong...

olde_fashioned: (Little Dorrit -- upside down w/ text)
Alright, so having missed this when it initially aired, I know I'm late to the party, but OH MY GOODNESS this was so good!!! The ending was really confusing (bad way to wrap up the big huge secret, ppl), but Arthur was such a sweetheart and Amy angelically good--she's definitely up there with the likes of Fanny Price and Book!Margaret Hale.

Gotta love the costumes and hairstyles on the more affluent women! Towering hairdos much? ;P

RENT! )
olde_fashioned: (Downton Abbey -- Downton landscape)
So let me first preface this with the disclaimer of I do not approve of certain "content" in this series despite the fact that I'm iconing it. Since it'd be a shame to let all those gorgeous costumes and hats go to waste...here's the first batch of what I am sure will be many more (especially once the second series airs). ;)

olde_fashioned: (Bright Star -- lavender fields)
I made these a few months back, after watching Bright Star for the first time. Such a pretty movie!!! Not being huge on poetry myself, this might not be the best thing for someone with a low "emo" tolerance, but the visuals certainly are worth it. *sigh*

I want all of Fanny's clothes. :P

Having grown up adoring the books, it still irks me that they changed Elizabeth and made her a blonde (don't EVEN get me started on what they did to Felicity's "meet" dress!!), but at least it's 18th century, right?

In retrospect, it quite possibly could be due to Felicity that I'm so fond of this era...

I suppose we'll never really know. ;-)

olde_fashioned: (JE 2011 -- windswept)
Even though my initial reaction upon hearing of yet another adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's beautiful novel Jane Eyre was "NOT AGAIN!", I am very much liking the looks of the trailer and promotional images, both of which inspired me to whip up a quick batch of icons in celebratory anticipation of the film's theatrical (!!!) release in March of next year. (And Judi Dench, yay!)

''Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!--I have as much soul as you,--and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you.'' )
olde_fashioned: (P&P2 -- Lizzy letter reading)
At long last, I've finished this [livejournal.com profile] icons100 batch...it took me longer than I wanted due to a lack of creativity. I'm satisfied, however, with FINALLY having made a proper batch of icons from one of my very favourite movies. ;-)

olde_fashioned: (P&P2 -- Lizzy & Darcy (Lambton Inn))
Arguably one of the best costume dramas ever produced (and one of if not THE best Jane Austen adaptation to date), this batch just kind of "happened"...and then it grew and grew and grew, so I figured why not get a [livejournal.com profile] icons100 claim for it! ;-P

I do love this movie, it'll always be one of my "feel-good" pieces, and I love how faithful (and LONG!!!) to the original novel it is. The costumes, the music (who else had to run out and buy a CD with "Mr. Beveridge's Maggot" on it?), the acting and casting... ♥

''She is tolerable, I suppose, but not handsome enough to tempt me; I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. '' )
olde_fashioned: (18th C. -- Romney white)
This is a MASSIVE dump of icons posted in honour of two very special friends (you know who you are!) who both happen to share a love of the 18th century; I hope no one minds "sharing" a gift, as I am posting them publicly for the enjoyment of all my other readers! ;-D

I do apologize for the lack of my usual extensive noting of the artist and painting in my art posts, but to be frank, the vast majority of these I found without any names attached to them; therefore, I am in complete ignorance. Deciding it would be better to post them as unknowns than to never use them, I've thrown them in random order along with some other paintings whose artist and subject name (and, sometimes a date) I have endeavored to preserve in the file name (right-click>>copy image location, or right-click>>save image as).

The tags will give you an idea of some of the artists you can expect to see. ;-)

More cleaning of the hard drive! ;-D

One of the very first of the many that can be credited with helping to infect me with the disease joy of costume dramas, Daniel Deronda remains one of the best, most well-acted, and definitely one of the prettiest, at least as costuming goes.

olde_fashioned: (MA -- pink texture)
Even though I'm probably the last person in the galaxy to have seen this movie (let alone iconing it), I finally understand why the gowns from Marie Antoinette are generally referred to as "candy" dresses. There's an unbelievable amount of pretty! Pretty clothes, pretty hairstyles, pretty food, even. Pretty shoes (sans the Chucks, grrr...), pretty music SOME of the time (LOL), and pretty scenery (Versailles!).

Hopefully these turned out as pretty as I tried to make them. ;-D

olde_fashioned: (Cranford 2 -- Erminia writes)
Here is the final batch of Cranford, and my first attempt at making icons of Return to Cranford, all from promotional stills.

While of course most everyone and their mother (no joke!) loved Cranford, some disliked the sequel. I however found it to be an excellent follow-up that included some of Gaskell's original scenes that the first lacked (the humorous situations surrounding the "cage", for instance!), and the new editions were well done.

(Did anyone else notice Margaret's "train station dress" from N&S on the character of Erminia in several scenes?) ;-D Squee!

I was stalling this batch because I'm not finished and I wanted to include some of the sequel, Return to Cranford, but due to this month's Wild Card theme over at [livejournal.com profile] costume_awards plans have changed a bit! ;-) I'll try to get a second Cranford post up soon, but in the meantime, here's my first batch of icons from this lovely series.

These are old icontest entries I'd actually entirely forgotten about not having made them public yet. Some of these turned out, but some didn't so I don't like them at all, but I'm posting them anyway just for the heck of it. ;-)

Such a pretty movie...makes me want to break out my DVD or soundtrack or both!

olde_fashioned: (N&S -- kiss -- so this is love)
Loads and loads of icons just sitting on my hard drive collecting dust, so here is one of the many upcoming batches I am planning!

Three of my (many) favourite costume dramas are North & South, The Last of the Mohicans, and Lorna Doone. Each one has a great romance and gorgeous but not flashy or "distracting" costumes, set off by exquisite scenery and musical scores. What's not to love? ;-)

olde_fashioned: (TDK Batman Begins -- Gotham nights)
The completion of my Batman Begins [livejournal.com profile] icons100 claim, trimmed down to mere 175. (Did anyone think I'd really stop at a mere hundred? LOL!) I stumbled across some foreign promotional posters, concept art, and extra DVD material and I had loads of fun making them, so that helped bulk the quantity up. The quality I'll leave for others to judge. ;-)

olde_fashioned: (TDK Batman Begins -- concept art)
Somehow, my recent The Dark Knight 100 icons batch feels incomplete without a set of icons from the movie preceeding it for [livejournal.com profile] icons100. Henceforth I have set about to remedy this, and this post is the first of what will most probably be two entries regarding this subject. (Gah why does that sound so stuffy?) Capes, bats, and heroes abound, and of course I love hearing what everyone thinks!
