Don't. Laugh. You all are going to think I'm crazy wacko, but since this is my blog, I'm doing it anyway. ;-) "Despise me if you dare..."
Yesterday we went shopping, and of course I just had to check out the shoes...haha. They had some Skechers on sale (Bikers Luxe in black) that I've wanted since they came out last year, and my wonderful brother bought them for me! He's such an angel -- well he's so sweet anyway, not just when he buys me shoes! ;-) Here is a pic for those of you who care: click for pic
I wear mostly black anyway, and they have great support and are comfortable, so these will be very practical. They're kind of like a cross between ballet flats and running shoes, and they're rather flattering to my feet, which is always to be desired. ;-) Strangely enough, I had to go down a size from my usual 10. I guess these must run really large, or my feet shrunk overnight!! ;-)
In other news, we made it to the Friends of the Library bookstore today, and bought a stack of books. You can't beat magazines for a quarter and books for $1-2 dollars! I got a two-volume set of The Complete Sherlock Holmes to build up my Sherlockian collection, Sanctuary by Beverly Lewis which I read years ago and loved for some odd reason, and a couple old doll magazines. Like I need more stuff to read.
My brother Spencer had his usual mountain of knowledge to purchase, and it took both of us to carry it to the desk. ;-) You should have seen the librarian's eyes bug out of her head when she saw us!!

Date: 2007-03-04 12:36 am (UTC)You can also find really cute shoes at REI. I think I'm obsessed with that store. Even though they have mostly outdoorsy stuff, they DO have awesome shoes, even ones similar to the Sketchers you bought.
Hehehehe, I didn't go to the book store or library today, though. My parents left for a trip to Israel this morning, so I went to their house and stole books. Mwahahhahahahahaha!
Dang. I need a brother like yours to buy me shoes.

Date: 2007-03-04 01:09 am (UTC)Your brother lives in Huntington beach?? Whereabouts, if you don't mind my asking -- you can do the delete-comment trick, if you want.
I can't remember going into an REI, but thanks for the heads up.
You stole books? My goodness, I hope you'll return them...;-) Your parents certainly are brave to go to the Middle East this day in age!!
*smiles* I love my brother!!! (emphasis on the MINE...) ;-)

Date: 2007-03-04 01:16 am (UTC)My brother lives on Warner Ave. near Edwards St.
REI is awesome. They make me happy.
Well . . . technically I "permanently borrow" the books. Hee hee hee. I'm not too worried about the parents, they'll be staying away from particularly dangerous areas. I do think that the news tends to really hype the stuff that happens there.
I love my brother too. He's awesome. (I love both my brothers, hehe.)

I'm glad you love your brother(s) -- too many sisters hate their brothers. :-(

Date: 2007-03-04 01:26 am (UTC)You could just look it up on Google Maps if you want to see where it is. :-)
Haha, I don't necessarily LIKE them all the time, but I always love them!

Date: 2007-03-04 01:45 am (UTC)Ha! We've certainly fought our fair share, but I've never hated him. He sure loves to tease me, though. I tease him too, but you know how it is with brothers, bugs, and sisters. ;-)

Date: 2007-03-04 02:19 am (UTC)Friends of the Library? I didn't know you had one in the U.S.!
I'm a volunteer for the FOL here in Canada, I wonder if they're related?
no subject
Date: 2007-03-04 02:33 am (UTC)Yes we have FotL in the US!! lol! I don't know if they're related, but ours is just a Friend's bookstore that sells donated books and stuff, that's attached to the library building, but has a separate corner. That's neat that you're a volunteer. There's a couple really nice ladies who work there, one of which kept back the copy of Sense & Sensibility just for me, because she knew I liked JA. :-) They're not all nice though......one in particular is rather grumpy. I got a thank you out of her, though!! ;-)
BTW -- you chose a fitting icon!

Date: 2007-03-05 02:23 pm (UTC)Thank you! To make it even more apt, I think I should've tweaked my icon a bit so that she would be wearing the shoes your brother bought! ;)

Date: 2007-03-04 07:15 am (UTC)I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with a Sherlockian collection. Mostly paperback to go with the rest of my collection of the classics...
you're fortunate to have a brother who shares in the love of reading. :)

Date: 2007-03-05 12:13 am (UTC)Another Sherlock fan!! Yay! ;-) I've only read the Hound of the Baskervilles so far and a couple short stories, but as you can see I intend to remedy that. ;-) What else is in your collection?
Blessed, I'd say!! ;-) He actually reads more than I do. Do you have any siblings?

Date: 2007-03-05 06:42 am (UTC)Yep. I went on a Sherlockian craze not several years a ago and just went mad in building my classics collection. So, I have a bunch of Sir Arthur's books, but I'd have to go back over it in order to tell you what I have...I had just went mad over Sir AC Doyle. :)
I have a younger brother but he's almost like a complete opposite. It has it's pros and cons. You're more fortunate in that area.
:)
Oooh, I forgot to ask, have you read 'the Man who Loved Jane Austen'? It's fun light reading on JA. There's a couple others...when go a collecting..I go wacky crazy collecting.
You know I just seen Carrie Underwood in a Sketchers ad wearing a gold version of the same shoe! :) Neat, huh?

Date: 2007-03-06 12:01 am (UTC)I haven't read tMwlJA...I'm not really into fanfic or sequels like that. I get irritated even when an adaptation changes the dialog a teeny bit. I'm a purist, I guess.
Really...that's funny! Have you heard Jesus Take the Wheel?

Date: 2007-03-05 02:58 am (UTC)Anyways it sounds like you had a very fun weekend! And it was very sweet of your brother to buy you those shoes. I also went a while back to one of those local library sales where they sell old library books...we got there pretty late and it was pretty picked over :(. I was hoping that I could find some cheap Jane Austen novels to add to my library.
BTW I love your new default user icon! What software do you use?
no subject
Date: 2007-03-05 09:26 pm (UTC)JA was actually my goal for the trip, as well, but to no avail. ;-)
Thanks for the comment on the icon. I use Paint.NET, but I have broken my "tradition" of using only my own, and I uploaded a couple ones made by others. My new default is a Mucha icon made by my friend

Date: 2007-03-05 07:52 am (UTC)Ah book sales... I run in the opposite direction when I see a sign indicating one. Nothing will impoverish me quicker then old books at discount prices! I would be interested in hearing your opinion of Holmes; I'm yet to start on the collection my Mother bought me years ago, I think there's just something too dispassionate about the title character for my taste.
no subject
Date: 2007-03-05 09:51 pm (UTC)I promise never to bug you about shoes, if you do not like to hear about them. ;-) And I will enjoy them, thank you!
I avoid bookstores for the same reasons. ;-) What can I say? It lightens my wallet, at the very least. ;-) One doesn't want one's wallet getting too heavy, you know!
I find Sherlock Holmes stories to be fun and interesting reads, and I can't help but liking him and Watson. They are so...I don't know, vivid? Even Sherlock with all his faults and habits (ahem) is still likeable, IMO.
I read a Scandal in Bohemia last night, and it said that Holmes frowned on emotions, and love in particular, because of what it does to the sense of logic that he so highly prizes. I for one disagree that emotions are undesirable, but I can still like Sherlock anyway. ;-) (IMVHO he showed some emotion himself in Hound of the Baskervilles, when he thought he was responsible for someone's death. He was distraught, and I thought that was a wonderful insight into his character)
As for the rest of my Holmesian story collection, they shall have to wait until I finish Wives & Daughters, which I am starting today. ;-)
What is your own opinion on Sherlock Holmes? I'd love to hear it.
~L. :-)

Date: 2007-03-11 09:24 pm (UTC)As for St. John Rivers, I found him insufferable and tiresome! I am not even sure of his "desire to please God" -- I think it was partially a desire for greatness, and to become what he felt was pious, but was really more like holier-than-thou. If he wanted to die amongst the Hindus then fine, but the way he tried to impose his own will on Jane was abominable, and then when she refused him, she was refusing God? Ugh. We are not all destined for great and spectacular deeds. God gives each one of us a talent, and not everyone is cut out for missionary works.

Date: 2007-03-13 01:03 am (UTC)You are endeavoring to disarm me by reason...
Date: 2007-03-13 01:26 am (UTC)I don't think I would mind being a missionary's wife. ;-) I just don't think I'd like going to certain countries. Africa or China just doesn't sound like the type of life for me, plus I don't think those are safe places to raise one's children. But I'd *love* to be a missionary to England, Scotland, or Ireland!!!!! 8-)
"Temporary" mission work to the more third-world countries wouldn't be as bad, though. I think I'd be afraid to go by myself, though.
A fever of the flesh!!
Date: 2007-03-17 06:22 am (UTC)A missionary to England? *lol* Well, I cannot deny that we're in need of the civil instruction. Beware the English coldness; beware the Irish anger; beware the Scottish car bombs! Oh no, wait, only the English need fear the Scottish car bombs... *wink* Do you imagine Mr. Rochester accompanying you on a missionaries quest (were you as captivated as others seem to have been)?
Re: A fever of the flesh!!
Date: 2007-03-17 09:23 pm (UTC)I am glad you are not bothered. And you're right -- it doesn't matter, and I shall always like you!!! :-)
Well, I see your point on the lack of familial expectations. But I for one would love a few children someday. As for Jane's marriage to St. John, I think he would most likely find it his "duty" to propagate pious preschoolers. I can just imagine him having sons and naming them Methuselah and Ezekial. *rolls eyes* I think you would make a good missionary -- you have that delicate, tactful sense that one would need when dealing with violent heathens, plus I think you have a strong and compassionate nature. I, on the other hand, would probably get skewered for opening my big mouth. ;-)
I didn't mean that you English are degenerate or profligate!! Please don't take it that way. I've heard of UK missionaries, and I think it would be delightful to live there. I have no problem with "English coldness" since I myself have been called cold, and I know I'm not. I bet there's a lot of warmth and feeling beneath that stiff upper lip! I'd love to bring it out. ;-) As for Irish anger, well, that would be more difficult!! Scottish car bombs? I thought that was only the IRA who murdered the innocents. :-\ Just goes to show how ignorant of world politics I am. (I think I'd be more afraid of Scottish food!!! Haggis?!!?!)
Mr. Rochester? Heavens, no!!! I can't abide him. While I loved reading Jane Eyre, and I loved Jane, Rochester is most certainly NOT the kind of man I would wish to be with. I was not captivated by him, in response to your question. The only time I felt even the teeniest bit of sympathy for him was while watching the new JE -- I think they made him more "likeable" if you know what I mean. Other than that, I detest the way he treated Jane by torturing her with Blanche Ingram. Intentionally causing your love pain is not love, IMO.
The above reasons are also why I've never been very fond of Frank Churchill! But that is another topic...:-)

Date: 2007-03-05 09:16 pm (UTC)Shoes are fun! :) Those are cute. :)
I read The Last Sin Eater by Francine Rivers the other day, and finished A Noble Treason: The White Rose....which was very very good.
Does WW2/Holocaust resistance interest you?
Cross-stitching, well, I did a sampler when I was like 10 and never have done it since. Do you enjoy it. :) Knitting/Crocheting is more enjoyable for me when I take the time to do it.
Did you get to see the new ITV trailer? I have dial-up as well, and understand the joys of working with it. LOL It took me about 1/2 hour to download, not bad for a minute of footage. *grin*
Northanger Abbey, my sister and I are going to watch it tonight, and I'l let you know if you feelings chance. The whole 80's feel, the music, the gothic/funny/creepy...got on my nerves. Have you ever seen Ladyhawke--the whole feel reminds me of that.
Have a great day!

Date: 2007-03-05 10:07 pm (UTC)I used to think WWII was rather dull, but that is usually the case with something of which I am ignorant. Once I learn about a subject than I am usually much more interested. I have been trying to cultivate a greater appreciation for WWII, if for no other reason than familial ones. (My grandma lived through it, and her father was a hero and pilot)
Cross Stitching -- I LOVE it. ;-) When I was a kid my mom forced me to make a sampler, which I hated, but I eventually outgrew that, and now I say she's created a monster. ;-) I've made lots of stuff, and I have tons of charts waiting to be stitched. Mostly I prefer the Antique Reproduction style samplers.
I prefer crocheting to knitting, and I've made several filet crochet items. I need to practice my knitting...
No trailer yet, sorry!!! It's been somewhat hectic around here lately, and it's further down on the priority list. Plus I'm rather mad at a certain actor who's to play Wentworth as of now -- check out AustenBlog to see his comments on These Austen People. :-\
Oh, yes do let me know what you think!! I know it "has issues" but I like it anyway. ;-) Yes I've seen Ladyhawke...zzzzzzz....campy, what can I say?? But I see your point. I guess all '80s movies have a similar flavour?? ;-)
I hope you have a lovely day, too!
BTW -- weren't you interested in a Wives & Daughters Group Read?? I'm going to try to start reading it today, and you're welcome to discuss it over at

Date: 2007-03-06 09:43 pm (UTC)Well, Beka and I didn't really like Northanger Abbey...the whole 80's vibe was creeping us out, and Mr. Tilney? Oh man, he needed new hair, and he was too old! *shivers* Everything in that movie scared my sister, hahaha in an amusing way. :)
Did you see the new interview with Wentworth, he is much improved in my eyes. :) Sounds like a darling movie. *grin grin*
WW2 is a fascination of mine...I find it very interesting. I did have an uncle who died during peace time-he was a pilot.
Flyboys is a lovely WW1 film. You should see it. :)
Have a gorgeous day! I'll check out the W&D community. :)

Lots of people dislike NA, so that's okay. ;-) I don't like Peter Firth at all either; he and that Marchioness are the worst parts about it.
Yes I read the new interview...I still think he's a stuck up snob. "I'm posh"??? Gimme a break.
An uncle or a great uncle?? ;-) My g-grandfather died after the war, also.
I'm going to post some W&D notes later in the GR comm. If you want to join I'll try to approve you ASAP, 'kay? ;-)

A great uncle, lol, you are right. *grin*
Looking forward to reading the notes. I've joined.
Persuasion--the kissing scene sounds promising, in an amusing way, eh? :)

Do you mind my asking what was your g-uncle's name? Just curious. :-)
I know you've joined -- I've approved you. ;-) I'll try to post some interesting things as soon as I can -- I've got a hectic day ahead of me.
Do you mean if they're soaking we atop the Cobb, then maybe it would be interesting. ;-) I fear I'm rather beginning to dislike this RPJ, so we'll see if he can redeem himself with his acting abilities and his lightness of foot, since he evidently doesn't trip over tea tables. :-/ I hated the kissing scene in the Root/Hinds Persuasion -- how un-romantic is a circus?!

Col. Brandon, not so much. Ton him down 5 years and maybe okay. 50 to 20 is scary, but 40 to 20 isn't so bad. LOL
