Three different wallpapers, with the first being a Watteau painting, the second a Regency fashion plate, and the third also having a fashion plate, this time from the 1830s. Please comment if taking, and enjoy!

Watteau's The Dance

1024 x 768
(Just the one size on this one, sorry.)

A Regency fashion plate that I colored myself, with a Jane Austen quote.

1280 x 800 -::- 1024 x 768 -::- 800 x 600

I also made two icons to go with the Regency wallpaper

A 1830s fashion plate. Think Wives & Daughters. ;-)

I really should do that! My boyfriend always does that with images that are too small, but if they're just a little bit too small and are alright when stretched out, I go ahead and let them cover the whole screen. I've never been able to settle for an image that doesn't cover the whole screen, heh. But it would probably be better than simply passing on the wallpapers I really like but find are not big enough. (:

See, I would much rather have an image that doesn't fit than one that's blurry. I hate blurry images. They drive me crazy!

And btw, I'm not ignoring your [livejournal.com profile] victorianstills comment, I just can't reply to it until it's been unscreened. :-) I am enjoying our conversations!

I really do hate blurry images as well! That's why I generally won't save any wallpapers under 1280x800, UNLESS they already have a style that sort of makes it look almost as if the blurriness is done on purpose. But even then, I never really use them. (: I have over a hundred wallpapers saved from pixelgirlpresents.com, and I tend to use those usually. What do you have set as your background/wallpaper right now?

And oh, I figured that was the case! There's someone there I still need to reply to as well but can't for the very same reason. (Though, strangely, I don't think that comment is going to be unscreened.) I don't like screened comments. ): At least, not in communities where people can respond to us and then we are unable to respond to them until later (and perhaps end up forgetting about it by then). If only non-challenge/non-voting posts would be kept without screened comments! (:

I don't even know what our screen resolution is, to be honest. It's big, but I'm not sure how big. ;-)

An image of Washington crossing the Delaware that came with our computer. I tend to fiddle with the wallpaper a lot, though. ;-P We have one family computer with internet access so I subject my poor family to various smatterings of my favourite costume dramas! *lol*

I don't like them either. I wish there was a way to keep them unscreened for the people who are doing the talking!

I also dislike voting via comments in icontests. *stage whisper* I like to see who's winning!

From: [identity profile] untasted.livejournal.com
Hah. I have mixed feelings on that last topic! On the one hand, I do really like the polls. We get to see, firstly, WHO is winning--which is nice. But we also get to see, secondly, who is doing the voting. And I feel it sort of helps keep fairness. At least, I like to hope that it does. If we don't know who is voting/how many people are really voting, it could be easy to manipulate the results. I suppose that's always possible, anyway, but I do like to think that allowing people to see the comments/votes helps in keeping that from happen.

I also like when it's done in comments (as long as comments are eventually unscreened), though, because sometimes I think how we vote can be affected by how others vote.

Does your family enjoy the costume dramas? It they watch them with you/enjoy them with you, that sounds like a really neat, close, happy family. (:

I agree with everything you said, although I never thought about being influenced by the poll results. Good point!

Yes, they endure my taste in movies, and they actually like some of them! Lorna Doone, North & South, and the 1995 P&P are the family favourites of the ones I own. :-) They detest Bleak House, however!! I use it as a sort of threat. lol.

What about you?

Pretty much the same. (: I've gotten my mother, my sister, and my brother to watch one of my favorite films with me--which is actually not a period film--and they all did it willingly and actually tried to enjoy it. My brother said in the end that it was the most idiotic movie he had ever seen, but he and I have VERY different tastes. My sister liked it most, but she also has some tastes that vary quite drastically from my own and would not be willing to sit through any period films with me (but would be willing to watch some of the other films I like). She doesn't think period films are bad or anything such as that, but she's one of those people who are always go-go-go, and the period films tend to be a bit calmer than she has the patience for, heh. My mother, on the other hand, is a lot like me and can enjoy really just about anything and has watched lots of period/costume dramas with me (and has even gone so far as to read a couple of Jane Austen's novels with me!). I could never, ever, ever get her to sit through the 1995 BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, though. (:

So I think it's about the same, indeed. They tolerate my tastes and sometimes even enjoy them as well. My brother is the absolute least like me, then my sister, and my mother actually shares a lot of interests with me. :D

I'm so envious that you've gotten your family to watch the 1995 version! So, so envious! I don't believe I've even been able to convince my boyfriend to watch it with me yet, though he really likes the 2007 version (which I'm not too overly pleased with). Did they sit through the entire thing in one sitting, or did you all have to take breaks throughout the series? (:

(By the way, if you haven't noticed yet, I can talk...a lot. I hope my comments don't ever overwhelm you. I've already edited this one a bunch to take out some of the unnecessary rambling, heh.)

What is the movie that you like so much? I'm curious. :-)

My brother probably likes more than either of my parents, but then again he's watched them more often. ;-) He and I are really, really close and he's wonderfully good about putting up with me and my 'obsessions'. My dad likes movies period, so he'll watch a lot of things "just because", and my mom likes costumes too, only perhaps not quite so much as me. *lol* I'm not sure if they've seen every second of P&P since my parents tend to fall asleep, so it's not like they made it through a whole sitting all at once! They've definitely seen 95% of it, though, because I watch them so often. My mom and brother watched all of N&S with me, though! I did it in one night straight (go ahead and laugh) and they did it in two.

I am actually rather shy in person, but I try to overcome that and it's much easier for me to be friendly and open online. I can talk quite a lot myself, you know!! ;-D You haven't overwhelmed me at all, and I'm quite enjoying myself, so I hope you are as well. Talk all you want! :-D

Ahaha. I'm sort of embarrassed to say, though I know I shouldn't be. (: It's I Heart Huckabees. It's a philosophical/Existential comedy, and I really do love it so much. I've seen it so many times, and I could easily still see it so many times more.

I will certainly not laugh about the fact that you watched it all in one night! There's no better way than that (: I have watched the 1995 Pride and Prejudice in one sitting more than once, and I will probably do it again in the future, heh.

I haven't seen North and South. In fact, I know practically nothing about it. I've seen it mentioned here and there by people on LJ, but I've actually never looked it up on the Internet or anything. Would you say I'm really missing out? (Oh, I know the answer to that!) I'll have to try to find it, heh. :D

I am definitely enjoying myself! I like how responsive and talkative you are. Many people close up when I leave my long comments, or they simply don't know how to respond to me, hah. You don't seem overwhelmed at all, and I'm very glad about that. (: And like you, I'm shy in person as well. In fact, that's an understatement, ahaha. I simply...don't socialize in person at all, other than with my boyfriend. :D Do you go out much? What's your everyday life like? (Wow, that's a pretty big, open-ended question, hah. Sorry about that!)

I'll confess I have no clue what that is about, but I don't think you should be embarrassed to admit you like something. (well, unless it was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or something like that...) I have the old 1986 version of Northanger Abbey and I'll be the first to admit it's rather hokey! But I still love it. :-) It's a comfort thing for me, I think.

LOL! I agree! There is nothing better than a good costume drama marathon.

Oh, my goodness!! Now you shall have no peace from me until you have seen it. I mean the BBC version of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel, not that American Civil War rubbish written by Jon Jakes. I read the book before I saw the mini, and ohhhhh was I ever pleased!! (I would strongly recommend doing the same, since reading then watching would be easier than watching then reading and comparing the book to the movie, but if you don't like to do that then watching would suffice.) It was tough work avoiding all the online spoilers and icons beforehand, but oh-so-worth it. It's quickly become my favourite film, yes, even more so than P&P '95. You simply have to see it sometime.

Oh, good! I am glad. I love a nice long comment (or two or three....dozen) and I'm always happy to find people with shared interests who are intelligent and like to talk! I don't socialize at all, actually. It's kind of a long and boring story, but if you'd like to email about it, I'd be more than happy to. You can reach me at olde.fashioned@gmail.com if you like. :-)

I will, I will! I'll make sure I see it. Finding the book shouldn't be too difficult, so I'll check that out from the library--I'll actually ask my boyfriend if we can go right now, because the library doesn't close for another hour and 20 minutes, but if not, I'll check it out tomorrow. After that, finding the movie/series might be a little difficult, but I'm sure ONE of the libraries around here must have it. I'll look in to it. (:

I'll be emailing you right now about the socializing issue. :D

Ha!! Let me tell you, I thought the same exact thing, especially since Gaskell wrote for Dickens' paper, was the best friend of and wrote the first biography for Charlotte Bronte. But there is a shocking lack of Gaskellian materials IMO, and in general she seems to be strangely ignored where she should be lauded. [/rant]

I did not try the libraries for the movie, since I used Netflix to watch it.

And I'm going to answer that right now! :-D

Yes. It is already proving to be more difficult than I thought it would be. My boyfriend's university has the novel, so that's a start. I'll have him pick that up when he goes to school today. Butttt as far as the film goes, I see only the one from John Jakes. ): I'll keep looking, though.

Netflix! :D I should try that. It would probably be worth it. Being able to find movies that are normally hard to find would be enough to entice me in to that, I believe. Is it expensive?

PS. So do you not own N&S?

Date: 2008-02-26 09:58 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
It absolutely baffles me as to why Gaskell is so ignored. It doesn't make any sense! But at least your boyfriend can get you a copy. I know Borders here where I live has the Norton Critical editions of N&S in their regular stock, if you decide you like it.

Netflix has tons of otherwise hard-to-find movies, tv shows, documentaries, even music videos. No, they're not at all expensive IMO. I think it's about $5.95 for one DVD at a time per month. (are you familiar with the concept?) But when you think about it, renting a regular DVD in a movie rental store is about $6 too, but with Netflix you get as many as you can watch, not just one.

P.S. I do, now. My brother bought me costume dramas for Christmas. :-) I ended up renting it twice though, before December, because I wanted to watch it again! (needless to say, it now practically lives in our DVD player. *hee*)

From: [identity profile] untasted.livejournal.com
So wait, it's only $5.95 per month? Or is $5.95 each and every rental you make? If I were to rent a few movies and actually make it worth it, it would probably be very good. I'll check out the website and consider signing up.

Your brother sounds so kind. :D

By the way, have you read any of her letters (http://www.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/~matsuoka/EG-Letters-CD.html)?

I love reading old correspondence. I have, right now, a book of letters written by Mary Shelley (another favorite writer of mine), and I really should get started on reading some of them. :D

I have read a few of the ones that are bound in my Norton Critical Edition, yes. Mostly just the ones where she is hopping mad at Dickens for wanting to trim her story! ;-P

Thank you! I downloaded a new font that I like better, "Miss Brooks" and I prefer handwritten ones with the period dramas. Here it is with the pink brocade backgroud:

Yes. The more I look at it, the more I feel I like it much more with the pink background. (: The white background is a nice option to still give, but that pink background is so nice as well. :D It really is lovely! I bet it'll be a big hit. (:

I'm very fond of colors, and matching them.
