Sci-Fi!

So yours truly is now a bit of a sci-fi convert. Courtesy of my brother, I'm learning that science fiction doesn't have to always be space ships, aliens, and phasers.

My family has been going through a whole slew of things (some of which you might have guessed from my recent poll), including but not limited to:
  • the new Battlestar Galactica (OMG so good!!)
  • the old Battlestar Galactica (OMG so bad!!!)
  • Blade Runner (nice costumes and music)
  • Firefly (yuck)
  • The Matrix (double yuck)
  • Gattaca (interesting concept)
  • Jericho (very realistic and actually could probably happen)
  • The Road (grim but well done)
  • The Book of Eli (REALLY good)
  • the Terminator series (Terminator: Salvation is the best)
  • Tron and Tron: Legacy (visual appealing much?)
  • recently started Primeval (loads of fun and really growing on me)

Generally whenever I discover something new, I also learn that someone I already know already likes at least a few of those things that are new to me. Does anyone else find themselves enjoying costume dramas and science fiction? ;)

I might have to unfriend you if you say "yuck" to Firefly. That's just not right. Firefly is awesome.

I LOVE the new Battlestar Galactica too! And The Book of Eli, yeah, totally an interesting movie, I really liked it! Been a long time since I saw Gattaca, but I liked that one too. I should watch it again!

Next step: every single Star Trek and the original Star Wars. ;-)

UGH WHY does everyone SAY that??? My brother is perpetually giving me a hard time for disliking the show in general. I won't deny the basic premise is good (especially all the "one world" (or should I say "galaxy"?) stuff, but Nathan Fillion just drives me up the WALL so I can't stand him, or half the cast. Kayleigh is even worse. The movie was better than the series, though.

Oh MAAAAAAAAN BSG was SOOO good!!!!!!! The writing!!!!!! The ingenuity! AHH! I've never seen so many "OMG" moments and killer plot twists, painful finales, etc. in just one show. Seriously some people had some serious talent. (And is Adama not amazing??)

I grew up watching Star Trek and Star Wars so I've seen all of them save the most recent. Don't bother--I do NOT plan on subjecting myself to any further Klingon or Ewok invasions. :P :P :P

Have you seen Blade Runner?

From: [identity profile] ceallaighgirl.livejournal.com
Ah! Blasphemy! How can you NOT love Nathan Fillion? Haven't you seen Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog? Or Castle? He makes me laugh and laugh and laugh. I love it. He's good for my health.

:-)

And yes, Adama is totally awesome. Did you watch the prequel series that came out last year (or the year before, I can't remember)? It's called Caprica. It wasn't the greatest but definitely interesting!

I saw Blade Runner so long ago that I can't even remember it.

Well goodness gracious me--has it not occured to you that we may have very different taste (especially when it comes to men)?? I think he acts like he thinks he's the hottest thing since sliced bread; I can't abide that sort of arrogance. Whether or not he truly is arrogant is irrelevant, since his characters seem to be. (I've watched a teeny bit of Castle but had no idea he was on that sing along blog thing.)

Since we're watching television for our health now, have you watched The Office?

Nooo, I haven't had a chance yet, but I'm going to!!!! And I forget if you watched Jericho, but the guy who played Major Beck plays one of the Adamas (I want to say Admiral Adama's dad, but I'm not sure) in Caprica. I got all excited when I found that out, for some strange reason, ha ha...

You might want to watch it again; it's worth a few viewings. Plus you can admire the pretty 1940s-esque fashions Rachael wears. >;)

It's all tongue-in-cheek arrogance, that's the best part.

Okay, so now you have to watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. It's awesome.

Yes, I watch The Office! It's going to be interesting to see what happens with it this year.

Nope, I never watched Jericho. What was that about?

ARRRRGGGGG.

NO.

Yes!!! I've seen everything up till this season which hasn't been released on DVD yet. (Although some MORON online didn't put a spoiler warning so I know some of what happens, grrrr...)

Copied from Wikipedia because I suck at summaries:

Jericho is an American action/drama series that centers on the residents of the fictional town of Jericho, Kansas, in the aftermath of nuclear attacks on 23 major cities in the contiguous United States.

The series begins with a visible nuclear detonation of unknown origin in nearby Denver, Colorado, and a loss of power and modern communications, effectively isolating Jericho. [...] Several themes regularly addressed in the show included the gathering of information, community identity, public order, limited resources, the value of family, hardships of fatherhood, and internal and external threats. The show also features several mysteries involving the backgrounds of major characters, the perpetrators of the attack, and the extent of damage to the United States and its government.

Sounds kind of interesting.

Wait, no you won't watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog? Dude, it has Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day. You can't not watch it. And it might make you feel better that even though Nathan Fillion is the good guy he's really more of the bad guy. Your life won't be complete until you watch it. Also, it's really short anyway (like, 45 minutes total).

From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
It is! I think you and Joel would like it. Really makes you think about how dependent (as in, rendered HELPLESS) we are on modern conveniences. Also some really good writing.

NO. :P I don't care about NPH and have no clue who Felicia Day is.

Date: 2011-04-08 06:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ceallaighgirl.livejournal.com
You don't have to CARE about NPH to appreciate what an awesome actor (and singer!) he is. Felicia Day . . . she's great. You can't just not watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. That's like if I were to not watch a movie just because it has Blake Lively in it. I want nothing more than to kick that girl in the face but if I avoided every movie she's in, I'd miss out on a good movie. Totally illogical.

Aww, too bad you don't like Firefly but I might understand why you don't. Also, yay Battlestar Galatica! I'm in the middle of the third season and it is sooooo good!! :)

I TRIED to like it, really I did!! The movie was admittedly better, but so much banter, ugh!

Isn't BSG amaaaaaaazing? Who do you like best, and what do you think of Starbuck? Or Gaius (hee hee!)?

Date: 2011-04-08 05:35 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] handmaiden-yane.livejournal.com
Granted, I haven't finished the series. I love Starbuck but sometimes she makes me so frustrated! And Gaius...oh Gaius...I have a love/hate relationship with him. Sometimes I think he gets a raw end, but sometimes he is kinda slimy!

Date: 2011-04-08 05:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
I won't spoil anything for you, but I agree with you on Starbuck. She creates most of her own problems; then again, I have to admire her tenacity and bravery (recklessness?) in the face of danger.

Gaius is one character I would happily strangle for free. Yet he created such good drama, and contributed so much to the storyline! Where would we be without him pulling something completely out of his rear-end just to save his neck? ;P

I am currently pulling my hair out over her and Anders. I LOVE her and Anders but I also LOVE her and Apollo. Argh!!

Also, so far, Adama + the president = adorableness.

Date: 2011-04-08 05:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
Ahhh, haha!! Yes!!!! I liked him (Anders) a lot and liked the two of them as a couple. I understand the whole Kara/Lee thing and wouldn't blame her if she chose him; however his whole daddy issue thing really got on my nerves. (He's got a frickin' amazing dad, what's his problem?? LOL!)

Aww, I knowwww!!! What part are you on, for them/their relationship?

Date: 2011-04-08 05:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] handmaiden-yane.livejournal.com
Fat Lee was GROSS. Haha.

For Laura and Adama, I think the last thing I remember is them hanging out on the planet they found, in flashbacks.

ROTFLOL! YES!

Hmm, okay! Let me know what you think of how the writers play that one out. ;)

Yes, I also happen too love costume dramas and science fiction, though my science fiction love has untill now mainly been confined too Doctor Who (veeery good and intelligent television) just because of a lack of time (and I still love costume drama more, so that takes up most of my time)

Haven't tried any DW but I know it's hugely popular. I'm learning that the more realistic the concept is the more I'm enjoying it--barring of course any silliness in the execution. ;)

I suppose you know Firefly's being aired on Science Channel with new commentary?

Date: 2011-04-08 07:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] birdienl.livejournal.com
Yes, once you step into DW, you'll be swept into a huge big world of fandom! Because many episodes take place on contemporary earth, there's a certain degree of realism, but ofcourse most episodes focus on aliens, which is slightly less realistic. But there's also an element of human interaction, human behaviour in crises, which can ofcourse be very realistic.

I'm more of a fantasy girl than sci-fi, though I am a fan of Doctor Who, Firefly, and Star Wars - all the shows therefore that contain more of a fantasy-in-space element rather than robots and futuristic machines and that sort of thing. But I think there are a lot of period drama/sci-fi fans out there definitely!

I like fantasy if it's alternate history, time-travel, or something along the lines of "let's make a medieval-esque universe with pretend kingdoms" but everything else is bound by the laws of this universe/world. Once you start throwing in elves and fairies, you've lost me, I'm afraid...lol.

May I suggest Connie Willis' time travel novels, especially To Say Nothing of the Dog?
Also: hi there! I am a complete stranger who stumbled across you and friended you. I hope you don't mind.

Thanks for the recommendation!

It's not a problem; I get randomly friended often due to my graphics. ;) Feel free!

I can't add much to what's already been said except to answer that yes, I too enjoy both genres....and Firefly. Wash was my favorite character, though.

Like several other commenters, I also watch and love Doctor Who, both the old and the new series.

In any case, fear not! You're not alone! :-)

He wasn't bad ("Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!!") but his wife annoyed me, along with Nathan Fillion who bugged the crap out of me. Too many annoying characters...

Thanks, hehe! Glad to know I'm not the only one. ;)

Hey, your icon made me think of it...have you seen Centurion?

I love costume drama and I like some scifi, but it tends to be more scifi lite, b/c i love fantasy far, far more. btw, on the subject of costume drama/scifi, i heard that they were at one time (i don't know if they still are) planning to make a new Aliens movie set either in the Regency or actually in Pride and Prejudice's universe. as if the zombies weren't enough! lol

Arrrrrrg I hope that project's been abandoned!!! The article's rather old; that's a comfort.

I still can't believe they're going to make P&P&Zombies into a MOVIE. >.<

Count me in among those who love both costume dramas and scifi.

New Battlestar (sorry - verrrrry interesting concept and storytelling, but trippy)

Firefly (Loved River and the universe and humor)

Matrix (Um, they should have stopped at one)

Book of Eli (Well done)

Terminator (Really need to see Salvation - Did you get to see the Sarah Connor Chronicles??)

Primeval (Oh, such fun! Recently saw series 4, which is less fun but lots more human time travel, which I really liked and series 5 starts in May!!!)

My favorite series are:

Stargate SG-1 (much less political and serious, but I loved the characters and some of the concepts)

Stargate Atlantis (A lot of fun)

Fringe (I think you might find this interesting. No space travel yet, but time travel and pushing the boundaries of science and medicine, alternate realities, and some very fine acting from John Noble)

Eureka (pure silliness at times, lighthearted town full of scientists and researchers that a very down-to-earth average guy has to manage to keep from destroying themselves and the world - lots of alternate timelines)

Doctor Who (more new than old, though that is b/c of time and difficulty in acquiring the older ones - I would recommend Series 5 if you wanted to give it a try)

Frequency is a brilliant film with time travel elements (and clever at that). Very highly recommended.

Isn't Primeval so much fun to watch? I grew up with a father who loves Sci-fi and in all honestly Star Trek is my main one since I grew up watching it and it introduced to me it.

I'm really liking it so far!! We just got to Season 3 however and I'm not liking the change (even though I wasn't liking a certain someone towards the end of S2 because of what he was doing), and unfortunately I happened to look at IMDb and saw the number of episodes one of the best characters has left! So now I'm unhappily awaiting their demise/departure... :( (What do you think of the characters? Cutter reminds me of you for obvious reasons!)

Actually I did as well--I grew up on Star Trek and Star Wars, which is probably part of my problem with them now, haha.

Agree on Firefly, though the preacher dude was cool. High five on Book of Eli. I wish there was some graphics on that movie but I can't find any. :( I related so much to Solara.

I'm interested in the Tron movies but I wonder if it's too trippy. I have generalized anxiety disorder and it's triggered so easily. I still can't watch the scene in Inception where Ariande makes part of the city upside down. For some reason that was very triggery.

I do plan on making graphics for "The Book of Eli" eventually. ;)

Now I thought that scene with the city street peeling up and over was AMAZING, so perhaps I'm not the best person to ask. However, there's nothing like that in "Tron: Legacy" and it's pretty straight forward plot-wise. If nothing in the trailers bothers you then I think you'll be safe. ;)

I actually haven't seen any of these. Except for the first episode of Firefly. Interesting concept of a space western. But couldn't really get into it. My favorite Sci-fi shows are obivously Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate:Atlantis.

Yes, I do find myself enjoying both costume dramas and science fiction.
