More cleaning of the hard drive! ;-D

One of the very first of the many that can be credited with helping to infect me with the disease joy of costume dramas, Daniel Deronda remains one of the best, most well-acted, and definitely one of the prettiest, at least as costuming goes.

As always, never alter my graphics, comment, credit, and enjoy!

He just seemed unable to tell her or show her that he wasn't romatically interested in her. And didn't really make that clear to the audience either. I did really love seeing the Jewish culture during the Victorian era, so interesting and not something that is usually portrayed in costume dramas. And then the costumes! *drools*

Oh no, I don't mind death at all (except when it is especially bloody or gruesome) . I will never forgive Elizabeth Gaskell for killing off Mr. Carter :( But then, it did work out for Harry... Yeah, thinking back to North and South, lots of people die in that as well.

I haven't. Would you recommend it when I'm having an "off" day? ;)

Maybe he didn't want to hurt her anymore than she'd already been hurt? He seemed to be genuinely concerned for the welfare and feelings of others.

Gwendolen's costumes are part of what got me into costume dramas and historical fashion. They're FANTABULOUSLY FABULOUS.

Ahhhh I cried so hard when he died!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But actually, I heard that there is no Mr. Carter in the novella. Now, I haven't read My Lady Ludlow (aka Round The Sofa), because the copy of Cranford that I ordered from the library before the series aired didn't include that or Mr. Harrison's Confessions.

I'd definitely recommend Ever After to you, then! Great costumes (watch for a Waterhouse inspired outfit!) and a sweet retelling of the Cinderella fairytale.

Here's a list of a few other things that aren't too sad or violent:

Any of the American Girl movies (I like Felicity's best)

Anything Jane Austen (If you haven't seen the newest Northanger Abbey or Lost In Austen, both of those are light and amusing!)

The Scarlet Pimpernel
Watch the version with Anthony Andrews and Jane Seymour. The others aren't worth bothering with. ;)

The Winslow Boy
Hard to find, but very good and definitely worth a watch! (Great 1910s clothes on the older sister.)

The New World
Very slow, but very beautiful scenery. Don't watch this if you ship Pocahontas/John Smith, however, haha!

The Young Victoria
Again, very beautiful movie with good acting, and an exquisite soundtrack.

Amazing Grace
I want to like this more than I do, but it's very well done, acted, and costumed. It doesn't shy away from the ugliness of slavery, but it's nowhere near as bad as Amistad.

Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World
This *is* a war movie, but the violence isn't excessive or especially present. There's one surgery scene which is rather intense, but nothing is shown except the reactions of the characters. It's one of my favorite movies and if you value historical accuracy, then I'd highly recommend it. There are uniforms galore, the soundtrack is also fabulous, and the two main characters are intelligent musicians. What more could you ask for? ;)

Yes, he did seem to be a caring man. She did seem to take it well when he finally admitted he was going to marry Mirah.

It was sooo sad! :'( I'm pretty sure he was in My Lady Ludlow under a different name but as the same character.

I will have to check Ever After out! *adds to Netflix queue*

What a useful list! I have seen a couple (the Young Victoria, Amazing Grace, and many Austen and American Girl movies)

All of those looks so good! My Netfilx queue is groaning ;)

I really need to get hold of a copy of that. He was one of my favourite characters, and I was SO UPSET when I was told he wasn't in any of the books!

Also, I can't believe I forgot it as it's one of my favourites, but have you seen the newest adaptation of Lorna Doone with Amelia Warner? There's only a teensy bit of violence, but no gore.

I took a peek at my DVD collection, and there's also The Lady and the Highwayman which isn't anything to jump up and down over, but it's not too bad and has pretty costumes.

If you're not opposed to kiddie movies, there's The Secret Garden (I prefer the old '80s miniseries with a Colin Firth cameo, despite the annoying child actors...) and A Little Princess; but the latter can be sad if you don't watch the alternate-ending newer version. ;)

Have you seen Little Dorrit yet?

I guess he was Mr. Horner before they changed his name? Wonder why they changed it...

No, I haven't. I will have to take a look at it.

Pretty costumes? Must have!

I've seen both versions of A Little Princess, the alternate ending one made me so mad! A Little Princess was one of my favorite books as a kid, and I felt bad that they "Disney-fied" it. I think I saw The Secret Garden ages and ages ago but I will have to watch it again some time.

I have. Sooo creepy! Amazing acting! I think they botched the ending, because I had read the book I knew what was going on, but it was very confusing.

Wow! That's not what I was told, at all! Now I'm excited--he was one of my top favourite characters!

The whole movie is Disney-fied, lol!

They did botch the ending; I had to look up the ending of the book and have a friend help explain it to me. Badly done, Andrew Davies, badly done indeed!

After this chat I rewatched Cranford. I still bawl when Mr. Carter dies! Such amazing acting! I will never get tired of it :)

It was. Liesel Matthews (the girl who played Sara) has such a lovely voice though! I wish she did audiobooks!

My parents watched it with me and my dad got seriously grossed out when they made it sound like Amy and Arthur were siblings. Kind of an important conclusion to get right!

Oh! And I just got Ever After from Netflix! I will have to let you what I think!

Oh I KNOW I still get very sad, but it's not as horrible now that I know it's coming (I was in denial watching it the first time on tv. "HE'S NOT DEAD, IS HE? HE'S GOING TO LIVE, RIGHT? RIGHT????")

I still like him and Miss Galindo together.

Liesel Matthews is quite an heiress in her own right, if I remember correctly. I enjoyed her in ALP and it's too bad she's given up acting!

Yeah they kind of botched that, also the part where the inheritance goes to Amy's Uncle's younger daughter or the youngest daughter of his brother....???

Oh yay! Do let me know!

Aaack I know it still gets me, too! Poor man. *sniffle* And poor Miss Galindo!!!

I wish a lot of people did audio books, hahah!! >;P

Yeah, the ending was an epic failure. I was a bit "HUH???" at the hinted sibling bit, but knew it couldn't've been true (that's more of a Hardy thing to do than a Dickens, haha)!

Have you watched EA yet?

Sorry I've left this so long! Life has been crazy!

Inspired by our conversation I rewatched Cranford and even though this is probably the fourth or fifth time I've watched it I still got teared up!

I'm totally addicted to audiobooks! I usually have my favorites going on in the background constantly. At the moment I'm listening to Bleak House for the first time. Dickens has such wonderful plots!

Dickens does have very intricate plot threads that can be hard to explain in a one short scene, especially with all the extra "suspense" they tried to throw in.

I did and I LOVED it! <3 <3 Watched it twice in 3 days!

I really loved that Danielle was a very independent heroine, and actually fairly unselfish and mindful of others, unlike many independent heroines I've come across. And Henry wasn't a perfect Prince Charming (quite refreshing from the normal "Cinderella" movie).

It also gave more depth to the classic evil step mother ploy. Anjelica Huston was amazing and really made me (oh horror!) feel sorry for Rodmilla, even if she was very nasty.

Was the gown you mentioned the red and gold one? I admit I am shamefully underinformed on the time period in gowns.

And who could not love Leonardo Da Vinci as the fairy godmother?

I also watched Lost in Austen. I liked that one too except I didn't really appreciate the twists they put on the characters. Making Georgiana the bad guy and Wickam the innocent victim? My inner Austenite is cut to the quick! It was a good laugh though, the smolder and the pond scene had me snorting with laughter.

Such lovely recommendations, olde! Thank you so, so much! I hope you don't mind if I friend you to keep up with the icons and the fun chats!

That's okay! The same is true for me on this end, so no worries. ;)

You mean that you've watched it yet again, after watching it right before leaving me that other comment?

I'm not big on audio books, because I tend to get semi bored whilst listening to them. The only time I prefer having something like that playing is during a long car trip.

I'm so glad you liked Ever After! :D :D :D

No, the gown that was inspired by Waterhouse is this one: http://www.everaftercostumes.com/work.shtml

LOL, I was pretty horrified/unwilling to accept Wickham as the "victim". (I can more readily accept Caroline Bingley as a lesbian than I can Wickham as a decent human being!!)

You are most welcome, and I don't mind at all if you friend me. ;) Let me know if you ever need any more costume drama suggestions--although I confess I'm rapidly running out of things to watch, myself!!

Here I go, repeating myself. *is confused*

That gown is amazing! I am so happy they put so much effort in a work dress. And that website! There goes my afternoon ;)

Yeah :P That got an unwilling laugh from me. They sure did turn the storyline upside down.

Thanks! I may have to get another list once I trek through this one ;)

Hahaha it's okay; I do it myself often enough. ;)

Yes exactly! LOL! There's also a similar gown in Lady Jane on Helena Bonham Carter, but I wouldn't recommend that tragedy to you!!

I had to laugh as well. ;)
