Well, here I go cluttering up everyone's flist again, but I feel like yakking, so there. *nyah*

I finished reading The Last of the Mohicans last night! Gosh, I can't remember ever being so glad to be done with a book in my life. Now, to start Wuthering Heights as planned, or Georgette Heyer... ;-)

I feel better today, so hopefully that means I'm not getting sick. *points to crossed fingers* If I must get sick, it'd have to be delayed to Friday night, because it's just plain in convenient to get sick before then. ;-P

Last night was filled with strange dreams, about volcanic eruptions and getting chased on a motorcycle. (not at the same time - two separate dreams!) None of the cowboys or costume balls that I was hoping for, drat!

I think most of you know my feelings on the subject of our new president, but I've been doing some thinking the past few days. No matter what Obama's platform, politics, and policies, God is still in control. God allowed him to become president, and even what is intended for evil, He can turn for good, so I'm going to try and be less worried about stuff that I can't directly control. (i.e., pretty much nothing!) If God cares about a little sparrow that falls, and if he can take what Joseph's brothers did by selling him into slavery and turn that into something good, then he can certainly use someone like Obama.

I think that we should all pray for Obama and his cabinet, (in addition to our senators and representatives) - not that "Obama saves the world" or whatever, but that God uses Obama & Co. for what He deems fit.

"Moreover let us exult and triumph in our troubles and rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that pressure and affliction and hardship produce patience and unswerving endurance..." (Rom. 5:3)

I think all this hype won't come to much, and I'm sure the world will continue to turn as it usually does. The biggest changes are that of culture and the public view. Once that mind-set or ideal changes, the world will change. One man and one set of laws is only the buerocratic side, which is blown out of proportian. These people should be a lot more subtle, and give the world a little space and let them feel a little taller. I'm a monarchist and I believe that protective glove over society, which is kept from a distance and is given dignity, is the best way to go. And no matter how much the press goes on about Obama these next months I'll stay immune from their propaganda on his supremacy. We're all equal, I just wish a few more people realised that.
I hope my ramblings make sense.
You refrence to Joseph's story just opened my mind to a load of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs, hehe. I was in that stage production for years in London.. that biblical tale is engraved in my mind, probably not in the way it should be.
I hope your country is helped at least a little in the upcoming year. Maybe you'll give up and take Queen Elizabeth back ;] haha. Xx.

I pretty much agree with you, especially that it's the ideas that change first, then the country.

I say let's wait until Obama's actually done something other than talk before calling him a "savior" or "messiah" the way people are doing.

LOL, IIRC it was George III that we had problems with, not Queen Elizabeth! ;-P

I don't know that I've ever met a monarchist before! :-D

Haha, indeed it was. So why not, then ;] she'll sort out your healthcare.
This is something I've only in recent years picked up on. I'm 18 and its pretty much taboo for a girl like me to support things like monarchy, so I express my views whenever I can, its a very hard concept for people to deal with if they don't know all the facts.
And forgive me for being a little sour about independance. It's just due to your independance that the french monarchs were killed, which really hurts me, in a strange sense. You might be interested in this blog;

Hello again!

I am of a similar mindset about today's political events. Lots of sighing and getting on with my business.

But something more fun: Wuthering Heights! I got a nifty edition of that for Christmas! (The original work, not the one edited by Charlotte, which--at least according to my book--is kind of rare.) You may have just bumped that up to the top of my To Read list. (:

Hope you're doing well in general, and particularly not getting sick.

Hello again yourself! ;-D

Same here.

I've been dying to read it, but when I saw the copies of Georgette Heyer that a friend loaned me, my determination wavered.

Thank you! :-) I'm doing okay today, and don't think sick is on the menu. ;-P

Ahhh, have you come to tip the scales back towards Georgette Heyer? ;-D

Well, does it have to be an either/or? Wuthering Heights is a fantastic book and you should definitely read it.

Georgette Heyer is a very fun writer. Her characters are not profound nor are her plots complicated or particularly "interesting", but they are really quite funny. If you want a guaranteed happy ending, a bit of amusing sparring, a Regency romance minus sex (which is surprisingly hard to find...) and historical accuracy, then they're great. I do find if I read too many at one go then I notice that they'll all pretty much the same, but that doesn't detract from the individual enjoyment.

My favourites are probably Arabella, A Lady of Quality, Devil's Cub, Cousin Kate and The Talisman. The only one I particularly disliked is Venetia but lots of people have that as their favourite!

Whichever you chose, enjoy! :)

From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
No, it doesn't, because I'll probably tackle WH first, and then delve into Heyer. ;-)

That's pretty much the impression that I have formed of her, and it's another reason I was considering something less melodramatic, as I could use something a little more cheerful. But I have this silly notion in my head that it would be more enjoyable to read WH in wintertime, with as much cold weather as Southern California gets, to help "create the proper mood" in which to enjoy something Bronte. ;-P

Thanks a lot for your help and advice! I hope I have some of the titles you mentioned. ;-D

Yup, God is in control.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm going to make fun of politics as I always have, but I'm not going to be petty as some people have been for the last eight years. I don't want to turn the next four years into some sort of hatefest of Obama Derangement Syndrome. If he gets something right, then we should acknowledge it. Yeah.

But you know, this ISN'T the end of the world. I don't feel like my whole world is crushed by the fact that I think he is absolutely the wrong leader for our country. It just means I have to work harder on my side, and look forward toward the next election. This will just be a character-building experience for us. And we have to work extra-hard to not be jerks. Or at least I do. ;-)

Whew.

(And from the start, my main prayer is for the unborn babies.)

My dear hope you feel better soon and don't sick! :sending over chicken soup:

I wish I knew where my copy of Wuthering Heights was since I haven't read it. I finished Little Women a few weeks ago. As for Georgette Heyer-I've been told it depends on which book you start first that makes you want to continue to read her.

I'm sick to death of hearing about Obama. He's all hype and just spent $150 million dollars on his inaguartion where there wasn't a need to do. I mean take $100 million of that money and use it for his so-called "ecomonic plan" instead of wasting more of our tax payer money or China's money.

LOL, thank you, and so far so good today!

My copy is a used and battered cheapo edition I snatched at the library bookstore, because I hate reading novels on loan. I never finish them before they have to go back, it seems.

Uh oh, well, perhaps I should tell you which ones I have and ask if I ought to read them or not, lol!! Seriously though, I'm thinkin' I'll just stick with Heathcliff and Cathy. ;-P

That's a fantastic idea! And what did they spend so much money on? Security?

Sometimes we all need to be reminded that the world doesn't end just because something doesn't go the way we think it should. ;-)

P.S. It seems to be unanimous! I think I'll go with that. Thanks!

awww, I hope you are feeling better soon. Maybe it's the winter blahs, I know I've had a lot of that lately, I'm really tired of the cold and sunless days. If you feel like a cold is coming on try using Zicam, it always works for me.

And like you, I wasn't happy about the change today, but I know God is in control and do hope He can use events for His good. But there is also a certain amount of skepticism on my part as men are men and we do have free will. Sometimes God allows us to do what we shouldn't to show us that we do need Him.

I like the verse you quoted, it's one that we should all remember as we go through our own personal trials. And your comment about the sparrow made me think of the song with the lyrics, "When Jesus is my portion, a constant friend is He. His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches over me"

I haven't read Last of the Mohicans, it's still on my 'to be read' pile. What didn't you like about it?

From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
Winter blahs? Living in Southern California, we hardly ever get those. ;-P It's been hot here lately, so send me some cold weather, would ya?? ;-P

You're the second person to tell me about Zicam today, and I'd never heard of it before. Where does one get it?

Amen.

Thanks! I almost chickened out, at the thought of getting attacked again for touching on religion + politics, so I'm glad at least one person liked it. :-)

Welll...it's kind of hard to explain. Basically, I have issues with JFC's style of writing, "pompous" ways of characterizing, describing, and especially writing dialog. The core theme/plot/idea of the book aside, it's not at all realistic, especially the civilians. If you don't mind overly dramatic and stereotyped language, then it might not bother you, as I could just be a book snob, lol. I didn't hate it, but it was beginning to bore me. Part of the problem is that it's too long, and what could have made up a nice short novel begins to drag and drone into this big saga of repetitiously "action-packed" chapters, which JFC really should have hacked away at during editing.

Have you seen the movie? If you love it, or want to get some "back story" on those characters, then I'd recommend it to you, but make sure to get an edition with footnotes (including Cooper's own original 1830s notes for an English edition) as well as a French dictionary. There was one scene in particular where I would have been nearly lost if I hadn't run to a very kind friend who speaks French! (although, as silly as it sounds, recalling a certain scene from Timeline helped me a little bit with that, lol...)

OKAY, I'll shut up now!! ;-P

Ah, I forgot you are in So. Cal...tell ya what...I'll send some of this cold stuff to you if you send the warm this way. lol I'm more than ready for spring. My little canary (his name is Gerry :P) hasn't sang all winter and I miss hearing him sing. He seems fine otherwise, just won't sing, and I'm wondering if he has the blahs too. lol

You can find Zicam in the cold medicine section of the store. There are several types, I prefer the nasal swabs, they seem to work best for me. My DH and I got colds at the same time a couple of years ago, I used Zicam and my cold lasted about 3 days, he refused to try it and he was sick for almost 3 weeks and missed a lot of work.

I'll look into that the next time I'm in the market for a cold medicine. Thanks!

Just some random advice you can completely ignore, but I recommend you reading Wuthering Heights over Heyer. WH is all romance and is pretty depressing, but for whatever reason Heyer read to me like some Danielle Steel novel...or maybe I'm just a book snob.

As for Obama, I like me some Obama as much as the next guy, but I think that a lot of it was hype. And while I agree with Obama's policies, etc., voting for Obama for his "cool factor" is just not cool.

Date: 2009-01-21 05:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
I'm pretty sure I know what to expect from WH, but I've heard mostly positive reviews of GH. What was it about her that you disliked?

I agree with that. Voting just because someone tells you to, or because it's perceived as "the thing to do" is not the reason to vote.

Date: 2009-01-21 06:01 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sabrinafair2.livejournal.com
Oops, meant to say it's "not" all romance, BTW have you seen the Masterpiece Theater adaptation yet?

Maybe I read the "wrong" book, to start begin reading her, but the book I read was These Old Shades. The main female protagonist was annoying and not at all strong like Jane Eyre or Elizabeth Bennet. She lacked any real personality and all she seemed to care about was the main male character. The dialogue seemed cheesy and contrived (she's supposed to be French so her language at least to me was distracting, because you can "hear" her accent.) Now thinking of it this book sorta reminded me of a worse, secular version of Lori Wick's regency novels (which personally I felt that they were lacking compared to her other novels).

Nope. I purposely haven't watched any other versions besides the Merle Oberon one. I know too much of the story as it is, and I prefer to be surprised when I read a book, if at all possible.

Less-than-strong characters I can tolerate, but not cheesy dialogue!! *headdesk*

Anyways, I'd love to be one I just do not know how to do it.
I totally adore your livejournal, you write so many interesting posts (I think I have followed it for a year now) and your graphics are so adorable.

It is still a miracle to me that I ever managed to finish Wuthering Heights it took me eternities to get through it. Prefer Jane Eyre sooo much, even it is not a favourite of mine either.

Ah, the stupid edition I have of Jane Eyre spoiled half of the plot to me, ruined my experience, I think.

I doubt that you're stupid. ;-) Give yourself some credit! If you're new on LJ (and let's face it - we all were, at some point!) then there's no reason to be ashamed or embarassed at not knowing how to do something. Asking questions is a good way to learn things! ;-D And you have carte blanche to ask me whatever you like.

Oh, dear, that's dreadful! I saw a movie version of JE before reading the book, but I've had that happen with other things, and now I make it a habit to ignore prologues, because they usually are full of spoilers. I get more irritated at spoilery footnotes. Why would anyone want to spoil the story for someone else?
