Thanks! I almost chickened out, at the thought of getting attacked again for touching on religion + politics, so I'm glad at least one person liked it. :-)
Welll...it's kind of hard to explain. Basically, I have issues with JFC's style of writing, "pompous" ways of characterizing, describing, and especially writing dialog. The core theme/plot/idea of the book aside, it's not at all realistic, especially the civilians. If you don't mind overly dramatic and stereotyped language, then it might not bother you, as I could just be a book snob, lol. I didn't hate it, but it was beginning to bore me. Part of the problem is that it's too long, and what could have made up a nice short novel begins to drag and drone into this big saga of repetitiously "action-packed" chapters, which JFC really should have hacked away at during editing.
Have you seen the movie? If you love it, or want to get some "back story" on those characters, then I'd recommend it to you, but make sure to get an edition with footnotes (including Cooper's own original 1830s notes for an English edition) as well as a French dictionary. There was one scene in particular where I would have been nearly lost if I hadn't run to a very kind friend who speaks French! (although, as silly as it sounds, recalling a certain scene from Timeline helped me a little bit with that, lol...)
