Well, it's all but unanimous. My proposition of a "Painting of the Week" series on my blog was very well received with 50 votes for yes. ;-) I know it's impossible to provide "gems" each and every week, but I certainly hope to find some things that not everyone, myself included, are familiar with! I love finding new paintings to admire. So, without further ado, here is the first...

Feel free to discuss and/or drool! ;-P

I love the sky. The lady sits all serene but there are all those tumultuous clouds in the background and a red sky. You can see the wind in the way her shawl and ribbons are billowing. Of course I imagine she would be painted inside. I wonder what led Copley to her portray in this landscape. Mr. Woodhouse would not be happy about it!

My syntax is woefully lacking in sense.

"Of course I imagine she would be actually painted indoors. I wonder what led Copley to portray her in this landscape."

Your observations are quite poetic! I was wondering about the sky, too, and how different this is from Copley's usual manner of posing his subjects. I would imagine it was the sitter rather than the artist who made that decision? But perhaps I'm wrong. Maybe she was fond of the outdoors, though.

LOL. "I'm afraid that she might catch cold! She is out of doors with only a little shawl over her shoulders!" ;-P

Oh! How I would love to dress like that! Why did women in the past ever let go of the fashion for long gowns...?!

God, I love how he managed to capture the sheen of the fabric and that HAT. Oh god, that hat. One of my favorite thing about Copley's portraits is the way he captures the people depicted. You always feel like you're looking at a person, not a clothes hanger.

LOL, I know, isn't it brilliant? And you're right about Copley, but for me, the fascination never ends with how he managed to exactly capture the luscious sheen and luster of satins and silks. *shakes head in admiration* That man was talented!

The dress is painted so beautifully and that touch of a 'windy day effect' really makes it even more lovely!

WOW! It's hard to imagine this is a painting. It looks so real, so vivid, her dress especially. I wish I could paint like that! =D

Oh wow, that's a beautiful painting! I love how it looks so real, and the dress is so pretty. Even though those dresses were probably very uncomfortable in the summer I do so wish they were still in style *sigh*.

LOL, yes, I imagine they were rather uncomfortable, but surely the wearer would be comforted by knowing she looked so wonderfully beautiful? ;-P LOL.

Gorgeous. I had never seen it before. I so enjoy seeing grey hair on a lady. I have never been a fan of people with artificial haircolors, but that's just me.

Same here!! I'm not sure if this lady was powdering her hair or if it was her natural color, but I agree that grey hair is very elegant. :-)
