Date: 2008-02-13 02:14 am (UTC)I am not really using Paint.NET anymore, since I've been using GIMP. But most of the techniques I use could easily be translated into Paint.NET. Most of the effects you see were achieved by using textures and masks, which are basically icons of glows, lights, or paper, set to screen or multiply on top of the icon itself. Does this help? :-)

Date: 2008-09-29 09:32 pm (UTC)Masks are a bit more complicated, and won't really work with Paint.NET unless you either screen or multiply them, but textures are easier. Basically they're an image that you use to get the "texture" transferred onto the icon you're making. For example, if you have a scan of a piece of rough paper, paste it in a new layer above the image you're using as your icon base (let's say, a flower) and set it to a transparent mode, such as multiply, or overlay. The papery-look should be transferred to the flower below, making the flower look like an old botanical print or something like that.
Does that make sense? ;-P
P.S. I used a paper texture in the manner described above on the icon I'm using with this comment. ;-)
