A quick question for everyone...

How many of you would be interested in color bars (or love bars, or whatever the heck they're called!) if I made them for various subjects? I've seen so many people using them, and I'd like to know if they'd be worth my time.

Lol...I think they mean that _____ is as good as love. Or they "feel" love when they are watching/eating/whatever-ing _____.

I think banners are a great idea... perhaps I'll see more when I get back?

*grin* I may be telling you what you already know, but they began as gay pride bars with the slogan "marriage is love" (rather then being just about gender etc). Then people began to personalize them, and finally the token rainbow colors disappeared, but the "_______ is love" slogan remained. You can still see the plain pride bars at some journals...

Ah, well... that's only how they began... generally speaking, if they don't have the rainbow colors they aren't pride bars. Colorless bars show support for... anything you want, really... in this case, Northanger Abbey ;D

I like them, but it depends on the colorbar. If I find one that is funny or I agree with, I put it on my journal (and I have a lot).

I'd love to see some Jane Austen or classic literature or similar colorbars. I don't have enough of those.

And yes, the colorbars started out as support for gay marriage, but they went on to making fun of gay marriage or marriage in general or anything in general. The gay marriage one said "marriage is love," but a response was a black bar saying "marriage is a black pit of despair." I laughed.

I'd particularly like to see pics from the 1986 Northanger Abbey...I'm one of the few fans of NA 1.
At least NA1 used Udolpho for Catherine's fantasies.
I am appalled how NA2 used The Monk; a book she never read !

You might like to see some of the older ones. The "xyz is love" statement is normally a link to the HTML code for the colorbar, so I could just copy and paste it somewhere. This is an example.

Oh yes, good point. That would explain why the codes often have "INSERT YOUR OWN URL HERE" instead of the image location. :) Anyway thanks for listening to my colorbar ramblings.

Nah, I didn't think you were stuck up. I have yet to see NA2, so I'm not attached to it. You may abuse it as much as you chuse! ;-P NA1 however, is one of my very favourites, despite all of it's deficitioncies. ;-) Yes, I am a member of Pemberley, although I read a great deal more than I post!

I have no clue as to your age, so forgive me for asking! You don't have to say, I'm only curious. ;-) I am not one-and-twenty myself, and now that I know you're a JA fan I can use all the FUPS I want! LOL!

I cannot speak well enough to be unintelligble ;-)
I believe NA1 offers much to enjoy; so much of JA's own dialogue is preserved.
Lovely to see Bath- the Assembly Rooms where JA herself danced, the Pump Room and Royal Crescent. Hats were a special feature of the film and many costumes are authentic- love Cathrine's white and blue pelisse. :) I thought most of the cast like Mrs Allen, Catherine, Gen. Tilney well cast; the flashy Thorpes wre the burlesque charecters JA intended.
P. Firth elucidated his little lectures well but was too serious as Henry. Loved the walk to Beechan Cliff !

I do agree NA1 has serious mistakes;
it gothicizes NA with the music score and Greogorain chanting. The Abbey as a crumbly old castle is laughable. Also an extra marchioness.
Yet, I feel NA1 retained much of the letter of NA; and as NA is based on Udolpho, the letter & spirit of NA cannot be seperated.
I shall proceed with courage...
NA2 also gothicizes NA to a degree with an Abbey castle. Catherine's fantasies based on The Monk; a nasty, brutal book in it's treatment of women. In NA, Catherine's imagination revolves round secret scripts, gothic castles & Mrs Tilney's chamber. JA didn't write of her sexual fantasies.
NA2 Catherine spends time reading The Monk which she never read in NA. It seems odd people overlook that.
It was distasteful and irrelevant to NA for Catherine to squirm on the bed as Antonia, a victim- which NA's Catherine is not. Simply an excuse for the silly bathtub scene. ;)
I felt Isabella's seduction out of charecter for a calulating flirt with a pretty face yet no dowry to secure a good marriage; she is no Lydia.
Finally, I was disappointed at no Bath.
Repetitive angles and archways of King's Inn, Dublin put me in mind of the backdrop of The Flintstones. ;)
I did enjoy Sylestra de Tourzel as Mrs Allen. Also, 'nice' to see a proper Georgian theatre.
Well, I daresay I've ranted too much. Please excuse me. Presently, this is more than I'd state on the NA board at ROP (again).

I use Elizabeth Sycamore over at RoP. ;-) I'm pretty sure we've both defended NA1 over on the NA board, and I'm glad you've come over here. Why don't you join LJ? One of my friends here has started a new NA community called only_a_novel that you might like.

As far as NA1 goes, I know it has it's "issues" but I love it anyway! And I'm always happy to talk about it, whether or not we've done it before elsewhere. ;-) PF is about the only element that I really don't like, along with the creepy Marchioness and the lame music. I think the casting as far as Catherine, the General, Eleanor, and Mrs. Allen is perfect. And like you, I adore the costumes, especially Catherine's blue hat! :-D

I don't really expect to like NA2, but I do think the pics I've seen of it so far are pretty, hence the icons. ;-) I was hopping mad (purist that I am!) about not filming in Bath! I agree with you in that I don't think Isabella would pull a Lydia. She's not stupid, just irritating. ;-) I'm rather angry at Andrew Davies for adding smut to JA the way he likes to do. I fear for S&S3! :-\

I agree NA2 is wonderful for Icons and it had some pretty Irish scenery.
Oh, mutual agreeableness. I thought AD totally renovated NA. It's too easy to add smut to films these days. Couldn't he be more orginal, more faithful at least in spirit to JA ? Alas, I share your fears for S&S3.
I hope I hadn't spoilt your first viewing of NA2 too much. If only it wasn't called 'Northanger Abbey'. Grrr !
Well, more rant; Btw, I admit much of this are not my own thoughts but certainly ideas I agree with. NA2 Catherine appeared an Isabella-in-training to me...staring back at men on the dance floor; I think JA's well mannered Catherine would look away.
Also, the screenplay got it pretty wrong with the gig scene; John pulls up the gig to remonstate with Catherine. She smiles and agrees to continue the gig ride. She could've jumped down or simply remained silent. (JA is clear Catherine felt 'kidnapped' with no opportunity to escape John.) In NA2 at the theatre, Catherine tells Henry she had no chance to escape- but she did !
I read a comment which I feel is very true- these charecters are rather shallow and lack any real moral core in contrast to JA's charecters. For e.g, NA2 Eleanor dismisses Frederick's seduction of Isabella by her comment 'She'll get over it'. What ! Can you believe Eleanor, a true Regency lady would say that ? As for Isabella 'getting over her seduction'- in Regency times her reputation would be ruined ! Very poor scripting...also, if Frederick seduced Isabella on promise of marriage, she could then sue him for breach of promise. Oh well, it didn't occur in JA's novel.
Well, I'd better hold my horeses here. ;)

I'm flattered that you even recognized the name! I hardly post so I didn't even think it would be that memorable. LOL. When you said your name was Mandy N. I figured you must be the same Mandy N. from RoP. ;-) I just looked up your bio and I see you're from Australia?

I'm sure that only_a_novel would be more than happy to have you! The more the merrier, I say. I wish I had more computer time as well, but I fear I'm more of a reader than a writer. I do check Pemberley almost everyday, and I'm reading along with the P&P GR, but the NA and L&T boards are my very favourites. :-) I've been trying to come up with something "interesting" to get the conversation flowing on NA like William L did with MP! I miss the bustling exhuberance from before, but I love how the NA board is so much more "cozy" than some of the others. If that makes any sense!

Thanks for your added insights into NA2. I'll finally get to see it for myself in January, February, or whenever the heck they decide to let us Yanks watch it! I don't have very high expectations, so no, you didn't spoil anything for me! ;-) I'll be sure to post a few rants of my own once I've seen it; both here on my LJ and on RoP. :-D

It'd be nice if you joined LJ, and as far as journals go, it's really not that hard, and I'd be happy to help you set up your header/background and such. Plus you get to use all the fun icons!
