This is designed to be a list of costume dramas that I like, as well as ones I would recommend to those looking for something to watch. This is by no means extensive, and certain movies have been omitted intentionally due to objectionable content. (what, I ask, is the point of a costume drama when the characters spend more time out of the costumes than in them?) I've seen a great many movies, and a lot of costume dramas, and very few of them I would consider good enough to buy, or recommend.

Why thank you! I'm happy to be of service. :-D I mean to update the list as I discover new (and clean content-wise) films to add. Thanks for stopping by! :-)

They should make film adaptations of Georgette Heyer's novels. She is severely underrated.

Now that is one thing I have never read. Perhaps I should try her sometime. But any excuse to make another Regency movie, right? ;-)

Have you seen The Way We Live Now? :] I saw it on a preview on the North&South DVD I borrowed from the library.

Yes, I have! And I didn't like it. Aside from the various disgusting characters (which is entirely a matter of preference on my part) there were a few inappopriate elements. I wouldn't recommend it. ;-)

I saw that movie last week and I thought it to be awful. Costumes were nice though.

You should probably see Love Comes Softly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Comes_Softly). I think you'd like it!=D

Heheh!! I've seen that one. ;-) Actually I've seen the first three, or first four? I liked the second one best. (they quote P&P!!) I have no interest in the new one.

Thanks for the suggestion! :-D

I haven't seen the sequels yet, but I LOVED Love Comes Softly. Such a beautiful, heart-warming story...*sighs*

You're welcome!=D

I liked the second one the very best, but after that they started deviating from the books too much so I didn't care for them. Have you read the series by Janette Oke?

Nope, but now I really want to!=D

I also LOVED Anne of Green Gables. Have you seen it?

It's not a bad series. :-) She has many that my mom and I have both enjoyed.

Heheh, I LOVE Anne!! I like both the first movies, as well. ;-D

I love looking at your list! I've never heard of Gods and Generals. It looks too much like a war flick though?

Glad to hear the kudos for the second Love Comes Softly. I've only seen the first one but thoroughly enjoyed it.

I keep hearing more and more about Georgette Heyer. I would think a producer would have jumped on that bandwagon by now!

It is a war movie, but it's a very very very good one, and something I highly recommend you try and "endure" even if you're not into war films. It's very historically accurate, too, so it's not one of those movies where history goes out the window, LOL! Plus the costumes are great! ;-)

The second is way better than the first, IMO, and judging from your icon, you might appreciate a certain reference in it. ;-)

I know! I've thought the same thing, and someone should also try to adapt Lady Susan to the screen. It'd work very well, I would imagine.

Just by looking at your user page, I discovered we share a love for costume dramas. This is a wonderful list.
Also, yay for icon/graphic making!

Wow! This list is so great! Thanks so much for doing it, there are very few places these days that list "clean" costume dramas.

What is your opinion of Downton Abbey? I recently watched the first episode and was totally enthralled until, well, a certain scene. Is the rest of the series like that? I was so disappointed, because the rest of the episode was so lovely, and I really wanted to like it. Should I press on?

I need to update it, but these are still the best ones. ;)

I did watch all of Downton Abbey, and I was less than enthralled with a "certain scene" as well. If you don't mind a couple tiny spoilers, then forge ahead...

[SPOILER ALERT!]

The two "guilty parties" in the scene you mentioned are both villains, especially Thomas. He goes on to flirt with another man (which ends up blowing up in his face as the other man is straight), and it's implied that Thomas is also guilty of a horrific crime. He does various other nasty things to nearly all of the "downstairs" cast, so it's pretty safe to say that despite unfortunately showing a homosexual kiss onscreen, both characters are definitely negative.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! Are the rest of the episodes okay too? I am now super wary of the rest of the series ;)

There's a sex scene in the story but not on screen, if you know what I mean. It starts off with some serious making out on the bed, then blacks out, and we're told they went through with the deed, but there are some serious repercussions that make it a little more of a "plot point".

The homosexual kiss was the worst it got. Hopefully the second series won't go any further than the first has!!
