olde_fashioned...and I really do need a more fitting icon, but it's the best I could do on short notice. At least it's somewhat fitting, lol. ;-P
Sorry for not being around much the past two or three days (I know I owe a lot of you replies and comments, I plan on trying to tackle my gigantic mailbox in the morning!)
Before I collapse into bed from exhaustion, I just wanted to say a few things...
1. To my flist: I'm not ignoring all of your comments, I'm planning on answering my (overwhelming) mailbox in the morning when I'm not in danger of falling asleep at the keyboard! Forgive me for being absent, and have pity on me for having to run errands all day long, LOL.
2. Jess, thank you so much for the virtual gift!!! :-D (and I'm working on replying to your most recent message, btw, too.)
3. When washing, vacuuming, and otherwise cleaning (from the inside out) an SUV, it suddenly seems much bigger...and taller... Oh, yeah, and I officially hate those stupid bottlebrush trees, whatever they're called.
4. I knew when I heard about it, that I would have spasm attacks whenever I saw any footage of the new Sherlock Holmes movie, played by the world's second-worst choice for a film set in Victorian England (after perhaps Tom Cruise, ha ha), Robert Downey Jr. of ALL people. *repeatedly pounds head on desk* I don't care what anybody says, Americans can't play Brits! Their accents never fail to suck!! Brits can play Americans fantastically well (as Christian Bale continues to prove time and time again) but Americans just can't pull off any accents from the UK whatsover, IMVHO. And I can say so because I'm an American and an anglophile to boot, so there, ha ha ha. :-P
Jude Law didn't look like he'd be a bad Watson, though.
The only redeeming factor of having to endure that trailer was the fact that they used E.S. Posthumus music! Their single Unstoppable is available on iTunes and it's quite good. I know this for a fact because Spencer just bought it and I've listened to it a lot, LOL. And no, I don't work for E.S. Posthumus's marketing department. :-P
5. Spencer and I just got back from a late showing of Terminator Salvation. And yes, I now have a T4 tag. So shoot me. :-P
Little Caesar's pizza was our dinner, and I just have to say, I love my brother to death. When he called to order the pizzas, he gave his name as John Connor in order to make me laugh. LOL!!
Once we got to the theater, we were way over a half hour early to the showing and there was still a large string of people already waiting to get good seats. A girl standing in line behind us squealed Christian Bale's name (which made me laugh, because I think fangirls are funny), but proceeded to say, "I love that piece of meat!" which, quite frankly, I found rather callous. I have a bit of a problem with girls who objectify their celebrity crushes as "meat" rather than fellow human beings (this one also happens to be married, thankyouverymuch), but that's a rant for another time... ;-)
If that's not to your liking (I know at least a few people on my flist will appreciate this), there was a giant poster of some new Gerard Butler movie and he was larger than life. LOL! ;-P
If you haven't seen/don't want spoilers for Terminator Salvation, then you can stop reading now! The rest of this post is dorky spoilery stuff, lol. ;-)
Once again I feel obliged to preface this with a big fat disclaimer - I AM NOT A TERMINATOR FAN. Never have been, never will be, but there's no denying this movie was coooolllll. ;-P LOL! Very well-made, well-acted, especially on the part of Christian Bale (who seems to shine in every movie I've seen him in so far - is there anything accent the man can't do??) and newcomer Sam Worthington, who did a pretty darn good job as far as I'm concerned. (LOL, I almost typed Marcus Wright, ha ha, time for bed!!!!!!) Judging from the trailers I'd already figured he was a machine and a benevolent one (insert grimace here), but the way they incorporated it into the story was well done and not quite so groan inducing as I'd expected. I also loved the coat he was wearing for the majority of the movie, with the haphazardly-sewn (repaired?) right sleeve and shoulder, the unsewn hem, and the funky collar that seemed to have bits of sheepskin or another leather-like material deteriorating away. [/costume geek]
Obligatory wifey Kate Connor (played by Bryce something-something - I don't think I've never heard of her) was duly adoring, loving, and otherwise useless (even in a damsel-in-distress capacity, LOL). Call me names if you like, but I thought she had really pretty coloring and auburn hair. :-D I love red hair!
Pilot!Lady was very very stupid, IMO, to risk her standing with the humans and everything else for some stupid machine. I did like that John Connor let her go, though, because technically he was guilty of the same crime as she'd committed.
The special effects were fantastic, the action sequences top-notch, and the plot nowhere near as contrived or corny as I'd expected. Much much better than either of the first two!!
No clapping at the end credits this time (as was the case in The Dark Knight), but there was a smattering of giggles when "Arnold" appeared onscreen. Does anyone know for certain if he's CGI, or did they use images from the first movie? I'm convinced he had to be computer-generated, but I obviously don't know for sure.) I think the entire audience laughed when John Connor told his wife, "I'll be back." I'm not sure we were supposed to be laughing at that though, judging from the mood of the scene, LOL.
Does anyone else get a headache trying to figure out all this time-travel crap?? I still haven't wrapped my brain around how they can blow up Skynet in the second movie but it's still there in the fourth...I guess I need to see the third. (thank you, library interloan system, for not getting it ordered on time...)
It was a bit creepy though; seeing a bombed out and destroyed LA, the bleak, wasted desert landscapes, and listening to the recaps of a nuclear holocaust. Despite the unrealstic idea of machines taking over the world, somehow the setting and overall "flavor" of this movie felt almost too real in the sense that it could actually happen someday...but I don't want to think about that right now, because I am going up to bed and I don't want to dream about the end of the world!
Hopefully I didn't make any giant mistakes in this post, LOL...*goes off to catch some sleep before it runs away entirely*

And yes Jude Law fits so well in period dramas that I`m sure he`ll be a great Watson too!

I've never seen Jude Law in anything, I don't think...

WHY they didn't go with Rupert Everett, I have no idea, I thought he played a fantastic Holmes (Jeremy Brett will always BE Holmes for me). I guess they're trying to play up Holmes' qualities as a 'man's man,' the boxing, the drug use (maybe? though I don't know what is particularly masculine about cocaine), try to make Holmes more of an action guy and less of an intellectual...though the beauty of his character is that he's an intellectual who can defend himself (or someone else) when the need arises.
Jude Law, on the other hand, I have higher hopes for. I was hoping for a more rugged Watson, but I'm pleased that they're making him intelligent and handsome and I have faith that Jude will play him well, at least not make him a simpering idiot, which I cannot abide in a Watson.

They've all failed to capture that level of emotionally "detachedness" (is that a word, lol?), the constant-in-control yet somewhat aloof attitude that allows him to observe keenly without becoming entirely involved in a personal sense.
The trailer was too brief for me to tell, but I can only imagine how painful RDJ's accent is going to be. *facepalm* At least it won't be much of a stretch for him to portray the drug usage. :-P (it also had a ton of clips from what appeared to be a "botched romantic" encounter with an unsavory female, which irked me to no end. Sherlock wasn't interested in chasing skirts, grrr...)

Amen!!! There is nothing worse than an idiotic and humorous Watson as a foil to Holmes' genius. Do they think it makes him look smarter to have a stupid sidekick??

Date: 2009-05-24 03:04 am (UTC)The level of detachedness (sure it's a word!) is something I really appreciate about Brett's performance, I think he's the proper blend off aloof and emotional when he needs to be, maybe a bit too frequently, but I'm a sucker for moments when an emotionally detached person has to give in and allow themself to feel something. It partially explains why I have an undying love for Mr Spock of Star Trek fame.
Oh yeah, the accent is not appealing at all, from what I've heard of it. RDJ is not known for his excellent accent mimicry, again, I have no idea why he was chosen. Seriously, he's going to have to be shooting up in every scene for the audience to buy it. ::rolls eyes:: And don't get me started on Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, who (judging by the trailer) has been demoted to the status of femme fatale. Or maybe I'm being generous, maybe she's only a sex object. It's ridiculous, Holmes cannot abide the presence of women. Adler is unique in that she appears to be the only woman Holmes has any amount of respect for and whose presence he can abide, there's little evidence that they were ever romantically involved. Hell, there's more evidence that Holmes was romantically involved with Watson than with her!
Watson should be a masculine, compassionate, human counterpart to Holmes' strictly intellectual flights of genius. He's a counterbalance to Holmes, not a sidekick and clearly Holmes has an attachment to him and a regard for Watson's intellect, otherwise he wouldn't keep him around.

I'm scared of it, too! Apparently it has Irene Adler in it...and I don't think you want to know what she was (or wasn't...) wearing in the trailer. O.O And I really need to get my hands on a Jeremy Brett SH movie. I've never seen him.
And I adore Christian Bale.
Hee hee! ;-) T4's worth a watch just for him if you're a fan of his. (have you seen both the Batman movies? I'm going to ride your case for all of eternity if you haven't!) And are you going to be jealous when I tell you what movie a coworker of my brother's loaned us? Equilibrium! Have you seen that one? I hope it's as good as I've heard! :-D
