Forgive me for seemingly cluttering up your flist, but I couldn't resist. All of you costume drama fans, indulge me here for a minute, and pay attention!

While watching the extras on my brother's copy of The Dark Knight, I was astonished to recognize a familiar face. I've taken a few caps for show and tell, so let's see how many of you can guess who he is! (and I'm screening comments only to prevent others from peeking first and then guessing, mwahahahaa...) Very good! Most of you guessed correctly that the person in question is William Houston, better known as Boucher from North & South. ;-) I've unscreened the comments, now.

Obviously if you haven't seen the costume drama in question, you're probably not going to know who this guy is, but I'm going to keep quiet about his name until someone gets it right! ^-^

For the record, the two-disc TDK includes extras filmed like CNN-style news and interviews, only renamed "GCN" for "Gotham City News", and of course, with all the stories pertaining to the theme of Batman. ;-) It's really amusing to watch, but this took the cake. ;-P You can see some of the "breaking news crawl" along the bottom of the screen on the second cap.

If you want to look for yourself, it's under the "Gotham Tonight" section, and the episode/interview entitled "Escalation."

I'd say John Boucher(played by William Houston) from North and South.

Ah, William Houston aka John Boucher of our beloved costume drama! :D

Pity he's uncredited. I know Boucher's role wasn't the biggest and most screen-time-consuming one but it was absolutely unforgettable and heart-wrenching. I think it's a proof of an actor's masterly skills if they appear in but a few scenes but you remember their performance forever.

Thanks a lot for posting! I was dying to know who it was. As you must've been well aware of. :P LOL

Sorry for endless editing... *sheepish*

He does seem to have one of those familiar "character" type faces with strong features, but I can't seem to place him, oh well. *shrug*

He reminds me of the fellow in "North and South" who wanted to marry Margaret, who thankfully didn't get her.

Excellent catch! :-D I knew you'd know who he was. hee hee...

You're right, his role is so very moving and memorable, and one you want to hate at times, but just can't, because he's so pitiful. Very powerful performance, IMO.

LOL! Yes, yes, I know. I planned this post on Christmas day, when we watched the extras, but I hadn't gotten around to it....

OMG OF COURSE! I can see it now, even if it's hard to tell without the hair...wow. Who was he in the Black Knight?

He wasn't actually "in" The Dark Knight, but he was in the extras. There are a bunch of movie-related news interviews on the second disc, that tie into, but are never actually shown in, the movie. :-) He plays an author of a book on crime statistics and escalation (a theme carried over from the first movie, Batman Begins) who is appearing on a Larry King-style news program, set before TDK's timeline begins.

Does that help? ;-)

...That is the wonderful William Houston, looking gorgeous as ever. Glad to see he's keeping busy and paying his mortgage. But I wish he'd do something on the London stage - now that I'M in London! I want him to play the lead in the film version of the book I'm writing. Well, a woman can dream...

Good morning!

I'd be sorry for a writer who didn't have a dream cast, actually. It gives the characters so much more solidity if one can visualise them easily. Mind you, that said, Simon (the character in question) was completely written and finished before I realised who "ought" to play him...

Do you write, then?

have a good week,
best wishes,

Imogen.

... It's the fabulously scrumbolicious Dr Millais Culpin from Casualty 190[*]!!!!! Casualty 1909 due to air on 1st May 2009.

LOL, I only figured that out the other day, by accident. I recognized him in someone's icon. I couldn't help but think, "Boucher's kissing Marianne!!!" ;-P

From: [identity profile] maggimoo38.livejournal.com
Sorry, got a bit confused, I took your reference to Marianne to mean Charity Wakefield who played 'Marianne' in Sense and Sensibility (post Kate)... and who happens to be Will's love interest in Casualty 190[*] playing nurse Ethel Bennett. Having read this thread it now makes sense that you meant Marian as in Lucy Griffiths and the lovely Richard Armitage who played Guy. Seriously, catch Casualty 1909 when it airs, not to be missed!

Date: 2009-03-05 10:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
I did mean Charity Wakefield, and William Houston, not Lucy Griffiths or Richard Armitage at all. Sorry, but I think I can tell the difference between Mr. Thornton and Boucher! ;-) I was referring to THIS (http://community.livejournal.com/apple_grass/5946.html#cutid1) batch here, where I thought I remembered kissing, but I guess it's just nuzzling. ;-) Sorry to confuse you!

From: [identity profile] maggimoo38.livejournal.com
Ooops sorry my dear, it is I who has confused the issue I fear! and yes, lots of nuzzling though no kissing from what I recall... although Ethel/Chairity did have scarlet fever at the time and was still a tad contagious!

Hahaha, that's okay. :-)

William Houston

I am really looking forward to Casualty1909 - very pleased to learn the handsome Mr Houston will be appearing again. The series is fascinating and often deeply moving, and the budding relationship between Dr Culpin and Nurse Bennett was immensely touching. That moment you've made little pics of, at the end of the last episode, when the two of them embrace and simply stand holding one another close gave me a really lovely, soppy, achey-smiley-quivery-hearted feeling. Can't wait to see what happened next! - since I gather the stories are based on historical fact & so there was a real Dr Culpin and Ethel Bennett - were they as beautiful, though, I wonder, or just ordinary-looking like the likes of thee and me?
Sorry, rambling badly there.
Have a good day, Olde-Fashioned!
Imogen.

Hi imogendent, check out the Casualty 1900s live journal community >

http://community.livejournal.com/casualty1900s/

If you haven't already. And three-nails' fabulous journal > http://three-nails.livejournal.com/

for all things Casualty 190[*] related (heavy emphasis upon Millais and Ethel!!). Also see:

http://www.pictureaustralia.org/index.html

Type 'Culpin' in to the search dialogue box and hurrah! the real Millais Culpin (et al) is revealed!!! none of Ethel I'm afraid although I do recall seeing one of her surrounded by her family post marriage to Millais. Will post you the link if I find it.

Thanks for pointing that out - and sorry if we have skated close to writing spoilers, that was very bad form of us. I'm so used to seeing films and tele months or years after they are first released in the United States that I tend to forget a BBC programme will air first in the UK...
Promise to keep resolutely mum...
Have a good day.
Imogen.
