Deborah, I don't pay a penny. I believe there are two types of free accounts, and I think I chose the "higher" one with more icons. I think you can upgrade yours for free...?
I don't think I get any ads. Where are the ads? I have an advertisement bar at the top of my journal, but it's blank since I didn't check off any interests.
