[olde_fashioned]

A much earlier gown this time, with a bit of an autumn flavour to it. ;-) My favourite aspect of this one is the blackwork on her chemise!

I agree the detail of the blackwork is amazing it's even on the cuffs (or whatever the ends of the sleeves are called)

Aww, it's just a "to waist" portrait. I wanted to see the skirt. I love her upper sleeves, and the gatheredness of the white material about her bodice. Nice.

I prefer full-length portraits, too, but there's not a whole lot I can do about that, unless I want to avoid 3/4-lengths entirely. ;-P I'll bet she has a couple bands of the same lighter material that is on her sleeves decorating her skirt. :-)

I can`t get over the eyes! They are painted with such perfection! The gentle brown colour really stands out beautifully! It makes the portrait even more realistic !

I feel like she would be a very compassionate/sympathetic person. Actually...that would totally be a 1500's Eleanor Tilney.
I love her eyes, I also really love her hat (or headband? headpiece? whatever it's called). I also looove the collar (with the black embroidery). She just looks so real!

OOh, now THERE'S an idea! LOL, you've single-handedly managed to give her a personality and a tragic romantic history. Perhaps if we search her room there will be some laundry bills hidden somewhere...;-P

Wow! This painting is so different from the stiff Elizabethean (forgive me if this painting is not from that era) portraits we see typically. Her eyes are beautiful and truly a window to her soul. Not only do I love the blackwork on her chemise and her sleeves, but I really like the tiny ring on her finger. How elegant!

It is, isn't it? A lot of people have commented on her eyes, and the ring is to tiny and dainty it's cute!! ;-D

This portrait is lovely! I'm trying to figure out if the grid-like pattern that appears on the turned down part of her collar is just the "back side" of the design on the front or not...it looks too regular to be the reverse of the floral design. I'm inclined to think that the lining of the collar was worked with a separate pattern. Thoughts?

I love all the pictures you publish, and I think you would love the paintings of a spanish artist, Federico de Madrazo (there's also his father, his brother and his son, whom I just saw you already know about). I felt in love with classics seeing his AMAZING painting, La Condesa de Vilches. It's my favourite piece of art EVER, I have a painted copy, a really big poster and lots of merchandising, and I travelled to Madrid last winter just because it was finally exposed at El Prado.

I hope you enjoy his art as much as I do. :)

By the way, do you know of any website where I could get a classic paintings calendar? I have enjoyed all the year a special calendar I bought at El Prado about their exposition of the XIX century and I would want another similar for the next year.

I only knew about Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta -- he's the son, then? I didn't realize there was a whole family of Madrazo painters! Federico isn't coming up in the search I tried, do you have a link with some of his work?

I've never bought a calender online, but I would guess that Amazon would sell them. I bought my art calenders at Barnes & Noble, but Borders has them too. If you're brave enough to wait until after Christmas, you can get them cheap! ;-P

I see a woman who has been through a lot in life. She carries herself with dignity and awareness. I think that it is a beautiful painting. So rarely do you see expressions in portraits.
