God help this country...
Oct. 17th, 2008 03:35 amYou know, they say you can judge a person (and a nation) by how they treat the helpless and those unable to defend themselves.
This poster doesn't even need any words. It speaks for itself.

(and oh, yeah, to any potential trolls -- don't even think about starting a flame war in the comments. I'm not in the mood for it!)
ETA: I always find it interesting how I get unfriended by people whenever I post something even remotely political. ;-P

Isn't it interesting? It's so sad and juvenile that people can't just accept the opinions of others and move on.
People have been vandalizing my front yard :-/

Date: 2008-10-17 11:49 am (UTC)At the end of the day we're all human, right? And children of god, as you point out here (I'm not exactly religious but ive been brought up by the church of england, so I know my stuff) so really Obama is a child of god too and you should have as much respect for him as anybody else? Did Jesus put up posters around Jerusalem against Herod and Pilate? He never spoke a bad word about them. He loved them all even though they were 'bad' or however you'd like to describe roman lifestyles.
I'm not voting for anyone. I couldn't care less about Obama or that other guy or any of this..
I'm just saying.. hate propaganda isn't exactly the best way to help society.

Date: 2008-10-17 03:38 pm (UTC)Ha, yeah really. What's up with people who can't bear to hear an opposing view?
Lots of the time if someone requests to friend me who I don't know, I go to their profile and see what they're all about. If by reading that I look like a person who they wouldn't actually like, I tell them even though I'm perfectly fine with them friending me, I warn them that they probably won't even like me. More often they look at my profile and whatnot and decide against friending me, haha.

Date: 2008-10-17 04:08 pm (UTC)You are more than welcome to keep me on your friends list, as my photo and costume entries are for the most part public, and if I recall correctly that's why you friended me in the first place. However, I am unfriending you because while we may believe in the same principles, I don't want to wade through posts in which the author posts contentious material and then forbids comments of an opposing nature. I also want nothing to do with posts that are intended only to bolster the self-righteous feelings of their authors. By posting in such a deliberately narrow-minded fashion, you are slowly eliminating those from your friends list that you may actually be interested in reaching, thereby leaving only those that agree completely with you. Soon you will be preaching only to the choir, so to speak.

Date: 2008-10-17 07:56 pm (UTC)Why is it "sickening" for me to post a poster of an unborn baby, with the word "Obama?" and a Bible verse?
Posts like this are not going to make friends and influence people and serve only to make yourself feel good about what you believe.
First off, I'm not posting about my beliefs to "make friends." I'm posting about them because this is something I feel strongly about. I'm not trying to "make myself feel good" and for the record, when I post things like this, I usually end up feeling quite the opposite, due to the amount of bitterness and unkind things people invariably say. So, I'm not doing this for fun. I feel myself morally obligated to not take the easy way out and hide my convictions in a closet under a pile of politically-correct clothes.
I don't want to wade through posts in which the author posts contentious material and then forbids comments of an opposing nature.
Katie, I was in no way attempting to forbid comments from the other side of view, but I'm sorry if I was unclear. In my original remarks, I said specifically "trolls". I've had numerous issues with people in the past who are only looking for a fight, and who have no interest in intelligent discussion. I'm not interested in humoring those types of people -- I don't have time for it anymore. However, I am more than welcoming to people of opposing viewpoints. All I ask is that they express themselves respectfully and not insult me or other commenters on my blog.
By posting in such a deliberately narrow-minded fashion, you are slowly eliminating those from your friends list that you may actually be interested in reaching, thereby leaving only those that agree completely with you.
Again, how is it "narrow-minded" of me to post this? Would you have me post a pro-Obama poster along with this one? I'm not bashing anybody, or calling them names, or anything like that.
And you know, I have plenty of friends who I disagree with politically and otherwise, and I have no problem "agreeing to disagree" with them! But if someone else is so shakeable in their beliefs as to feel threatened by someone else that is unshakeable, and unfriend them for it, then it is my opinion that they are being the narrow minded ones.

Date: 2008-10-17 08:01 pm (UTC)Yes, I post graphics here, and I welcome all who want to enjoy them and use them with open arms, and I sincerely value my commenters and those who friend me. However this is still my personal journal, and I claim the right of expressing myself as I see fit, in a respectful yet firm manner. I'm not doing this to "make friends" but to stand up for what I believe is right, however, I am also not attempting to drive people away, but to reach them.
It's a fact that Obama supports abortion. Why can no conservative point that out without being attacked? If the truth is so upsetting to people, then why blame the messenger?

I am a Catholic and the minute I say I'm pro-life people look at me like I'm a religious nut.
God bless you for caring about the children of Jesus.

Date: 2008-10-17 08:38 pm (UTC)Oh, I understand. I'm just saying that maybe you shouldn't be surprised when people de-friend you.
It's a fact that Obama supports abortion.
Absolutely. And IMO, abortion is a terrible sin. But I also don't believe in making a political decision based on one issue. I'm not saying that you specifically do this, but some people do. If a candidate is for abortion, they vote against them. If they are pro-life, they vote for them. (Oh, and that's not some perception that I'm making up. I've actually heard people describe their thought process in that exact manner.) That's not smart decision making.
