"We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time;keep back the tears and look a little pale about the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, "Oh, nothing". Pride helps us; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our own hurts - not to hurt others."

~ George Eliot

Abide With Me

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
change and decay in all around I see;
O thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need thy presence every passing hour.
What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless;
ills have no weight, and tears not bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes;
shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Lyrics: Henry F. Lyte, 1793-1847
Music: W.H. Monk, 1823-1889

Do you mean Abide With Me? I agree, and Hayley Westenra does a lovely job of it. I'd never heard the song before, until my brother bought her latest album Treasure (the US version is Celtic Treasure) and I fell in love with it.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bqrRNowf1Q) is a link to her rendition on YouTube if you'd like to hear it. :-)

That's from Northanger Abbey. ;-) All my textie linkie thingies are Jane Austen quotes.

You? Impish? Nevah!

I have no idea whatsoever where I found that, only that I stumbled across it somewhere, and I filed it away, and forgot about it, until I came upon it again, and decided to post it. :-) I'm glad someone enjoys it as much as I did.
