Ignorance is not bliss.
Sep. 21st, 2008 02:17 pmBecause we live in a sick and twisted world, and some of this will most likely come in handy at some point in our lives. My brother posted this on his blog, and I'm sharing it here because it never hurts to be reminded of what to do if such an unfortunate event should occur.
I hope that none of you ever have to employ any of these tactics, but better safe than sorry!

Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or a loved one's life.
Crucial because of recent abductions. In daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation...
This is for you, And for you to share with everyone you know. After reading these 9 crucial tips, forward them to someone you care about.
It never hurts to be careful In this crazy world we live in.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do :
The elbow is the strongest point on your body.
If you are close enough to use it, DO!
2. Learned this from a tourist guide.
If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse,
DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM.
Toss it away from you...
Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse.
THEN RUN LIKE MAD IN ANY OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will.
This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc.
(DON'T DO THIS!)
The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go.
AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
If someone is in the car with a gun to your head
DO NOT DRIVE OFF.
Repeat:
DO NOT DRIVE OFF!
Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your air bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat, they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes, bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.
5. A few notes about getting Into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A.) Be aware:
Look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, in the back seat AND under the car.
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.) Look at the car Parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side... If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you should walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.
IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.
(And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone And the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic.
STOP.
It may get you raped, or killed.
Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS playe on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
9. Another Safety Point:
Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her, "Whatever you do, DO NOT Open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.
10. Water scam!
If you wake up in the middle of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside taps full ball so that you will go out to investigate and then attack.
Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors!
------------------
One thing that my mom taught me, that I would add to this list, is to carry your car or housekeys as a weapon while you're walking. Place a key between each finger and make a fist, so that it is "spiked" with keys, and if attacked this will make a punch much more painful than a bare woman's hand.
I hope that none of you ever have to employ any of these tactics, but better safe than sorry!

Date: 2008-10-06 11:37 pm (UTC)Such as a well-placed stomp kick (a stomp kick is just what it sounds like). That might help. It is also an amazing defensive tool as well. A good knee-thrust can be both effective and difficult to counter. Ieally, but not necessarily it can be combined with a hand grab on the shoulders; you grip each shoulder with both of your hands and bring their body down at the very same time you drive your knee up into their stomach region, solar plexus, groin, etc. But that calls for a frontal execution, and for you to have enough of a handle on the situation to be able to use your arms in that way.
Another technique that can cause harm is to go at the attacker's nose with the bottom of the palm. It's difficult for me to describe. Basically you use the lower part of the hand and jab upward at the nose. But any sort of attack on the nose can be easy and effective.
That move is generally regarded to be a kill attack. The nose cartilage, etc. will be driven up and into the brain. I'm not saying it's not viable, but one who implements the strike must be ready to see its full effects.
Jabbing fingers at various places can work well too. Obviously this can be done to the eyes but it can also be done at certain parts of the neck and be effective.
The eyes are always a good idea; Keith Pascal once exhorted his readers to concentrate on the eyes and groin.
I remember a similar move on the neck in the Live to Tell About It: Self-Defense Techniques DVD. It was done as a two-finger poke into the cavity just above the the collar bone (in the little spot--feel around your own neck, you'll find it). I've also seen another move like that, but with a double-thumb attack (both thumbs together), driving into the neck just above the collar bone and down behind it, causing immense pain. I don't remember too many other details now though. Was it Kelly McCann?
First off, my #1 recommended resource for women, especially as regards firearms, is Cornered Cat. Seriously - go read it. Useful info for not just carrying a firearm, but general safety as well. And she has good links.
Ah! I too know of Cornered Cat!
On the key thing: It's actually a *bad* idea. I always read about it, did it sometimes, and eventually read more about it and realized what a stupid idea it was. As an example, take a bunch of keys. Place between your fingers. Now lightly punch a pillow. Try a little harder (carefully). Now imagine slamming your hand into something solid. You sock someone in the face with that, and those keys are liable to get shoved into the webs of your fingers, potentially disabling your hand due to pain.
I was more thinking slashing attacks. I usually opt for the something-is-better-than-nothing approach. Like I said earlier, it's not perfect, but it's a start.
Avoid fumbling in your purse at the car door.
YES! That's just asking for trouble!
You should *not* have to unzip something or fumble with something to access the pepper spray. (I know, this is very hard to do when you don't have pockets handy!)
Again, yes! The good thing about the pepper spray I linked is that it it has a quick-detach key chain.

Date: 2008-10-06 11:43 pm (UTC)I agree that there are good and bad for tasers, as I said earlier. I was talking to someone the other day about their own taser; he's got one of the best taser "pros" in his model. A very loud electric noise as well as a visible electric "current" if you will. A good scaring tool. But then again, I still prefer pepper spray.
Anything that gives you distance is generally preferable to something that requires you to fight hand-to-hand. We're women, and generally physically weaker. Distance = goodness.
Another amazing tip! You're the most enlightened commenter yet, I'd have to say. :-)
Any dress/hair recommendations I consider to be hooey. No offense intended, of course. :) In everyday life, one really doesn't have to worry about whether one's hair makes a handy grab-hold for a nefarious evildoer. Hair of any sort can be grabbed, and is one of the least of my worries. If they have one hand on your hair, that's one hand that's not preventing you from fighting back. Likewise, I'm a proponent of modesty. However, bad guys go for just about anyone - it's about power, not s*x. Truly and honestly. No need to advertise, but also, no need to panic about specific dress choices.
EXACTLY what I think! To be fair I have heard occaisonal mentions of something of ladies in skirts being targeted; once in Japan, for accessability reasons (not sure if the tale was true, and I shouldn's say any more in order to stay appropriate) and one local Mexican rape gang. They were fairly numerous and very close to home, but thankfully short-lived. I'm pretty sure they never caught all the guys...and they also did it for accessability reasons as well I believe. Well, that said, many, many women in pants are attacked. Like you said its, well...hooey. :-D
Of utmost importance, of course, is, PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS. Too many of us flit through life without paying any attention to the spaces and people around us. We walk blithely past blind corners and people we should be avoiding.
Again, exactly! Even when I'm out in broad daylight, I'm always looking around and even behind me. I evaluate everyone I see. Trouble? Let's see. A little kid? Fine. A small woman? The elderly? Should be great. A guy? Okay, maybe all right. What does he look like, thoough? Hmm.... That's just how I go about it. If he "smells" bad to me, I take precautions. That's just how I do it, but then again I'm a security-minded guy.
My own blog has a lot more on this kind of stuff too, as well as the blog I often link to, Warskyl.
