In honour of Memorial Day and the countless men who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Almost sixty icons of the various Civil War Regimental flags, as displayed in the opening sequence of Gods & Generals. (gee, imagine that -- I did a guy movie for a change!!) I iconed each and every one of the flags, and they are listed in the order that they are shown in the film. ;-)

As always, never alter my graphics, comment, credit, and enjoy!

Please, if you take anything, be so kind as to take note of the numbers of the icon(s) you're saving, since I am always experimenting with my styles and I would like to know what people like best. (This helps me so I can make more!) The numbers are above the icons.

Wow, I never noticed that the flags in this movie were so gorgeous. Looking at the Virginia flags (008 and 052) I realize they are different from the modern state flag. OO8 is the closest to the modern version, however, Virtue wears a smaller helmet and her sword is pointed down and not up. The armor is entirely different in 052 and the motto appears above and not below her figure. Both appear to have naturalistic backgrounds (the Appalachian mountains?) that is missing in the current flag.

I am sure that these were accurate reproductions. Now I wish I knew more about these, since they are about the loveliest Virginia flags I've ever seen (would it be possible to see the full flags?). Personally, I'd love to recreate one of them! Anyhow, thank you!

:-D They are gorgeous, aren't they? This is probably my favourite scene in the entire movie -- the billowing flags with their brilliant colors, that incredibly moving song...*sigh* I do like the very next bit with Lee refusing to command the Union army, though. Powerful stuff.

Yes, I noticed that #s. 7/8 and 51/52 were quite different. I wonder why exactly? *shrug* And as for seeing the full flags, Not every flag was entirely visible in the movie -- but I would be willing to upload those two caps that I used if you would like that. :-)

I agree, though whenever I watch it, I must push aside my memories of the book. It is a very poor adaption in that respect.

Oh? In what way? (I'm not being critical I'm just interested) My brother read the book and he did mention that Hancock was much more fleshed out in the book, but he liked Stonewall better in the movie IIRC. Plus I know that the history in the film is very accurate. But I'm curious as to why you feel that way. :-)

From: [identity profile] todaysgoneby.livejournal.com
The film places far greater importance on Stonewall Jackson. While he is mentioned in the book, he does not have the significance as the "main" character such as he does in the movie. But like I said, I did enjoy the film, I was only disappointed in the fact that they turned it into "The Stonewall Jackson Show" simply because they had a phenomenal actor that they loved to play the part. Also, there were quite a few inconsistencies in the history shown in the film, but I let them slide because they do represent greater themes of the war (and because one of them is one of my favorite cinematic moments ever). But do not get me started on the special effects. I try to cut them a little slack at having a small budget, but using the exact same action shot more than three times during one twenty minute sequence? Yikes.

See for me the scenes with Jeff Daniels drag on and on, and I can't wait until they get back to Stephen Lang again, who is, as you put it so aptly, a phenomenal actor. ;-)

I'd like to hear more about these inaccuracies, because I was previously unaware of them and that sort of thing bugs the heck out of me, so if you wouldn't mind elaborating, I'd be obliged. :-)

I confess the duplicated scenes quite escaped my notice, but then again battle scenes for me are usually something I sit through until I can see more costumes, lol. ;-P And if they're using hand-helds (such as in the Germanic battle in the beginning of Gladiator) I tend to get seasick from the shaking.

Which is very unfortunate. I agree that the Chamberlain scenes drag, yet Jeff Daniels gives one of the finest portrayals in the film. And is quite prominent in the novel. Their focus on Jackson also weighed the film down considerably on the Southern side. It was no longer a well-rounded story about the war, but about this particular Confederate General in the war. The book deals with so many issues that I was dying to see on film (most especially Hancock and Armistead's farewell) and seems to give a better picture of Jackson as a man with flaws, unlike the Godlike portrayal in the film. I believe they should have cut out the story of Jackson beyond the battlefield and put in the one and one half years of the war they skipped over (where were Shiloh and Antietam?) and cut back on the long, unnatural speeches.

This shot is a steady shot. Look for it the next time you watch the film. It is during the battle of Fredericksburg. It is a wide shot, Hancock's (I believe) view of the field. Not only is it a very, very poorly put together and fake-looking CGI-shot, but it is used over and over again. It seems the poor soldiers limping forward in the foreground will never make it off the field! I cannot help but laugh and shake my head every time I see it.

As for the inaccuracies (I apologize for talking your ear off; once I get started about something I am passionate about, I cannot stop myself), here are just a few: There are silly litter inaccuracies with officers wearing the wrong insignia, or generals referred to by the wrong rank. Cobb's "Irish Brigade" became an "Irish Regiment." Which brings me to my favorite scene, which you can see on YouTube here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=7qVCxEupPag). Very moving (I am in tears every single time, but I was under the impression that those men never fought opposite one another at Fredericksburg. But having said that, I did a little research and discovered that I may have been wrong in the that respect. I will have to do some further research. And this one is not so much an inaccuracy as it is an annoyance: they seem to indicate in the film that the cause of the war was the oppressive power of the central government only. There is scarcely a mention of slavery. They do not mention that the reason they South wishes to break away from said central government is so that the institution of slavery could be continued.

Wow, I apologize for the length.

I don't dislike the character of Chamberlain, I just can't stand Jeff Daniels. I will admit, though, from the parts that I watched of Gettysburg that he was much less irritating in that than he was in G&G. I have no idea why that is, though!!

The chief reason I love G&G so much is BECAUSE of it's Southern-slanted depiction. There are plenty of Yankee Civil War movies, and even some that attempt to show "both" sides. Aside from Gone with the Wind, I'm not aware of a well-made, well-acted, and good film that is fair and honest about the South's stance in the war. Villainizing the Evil Southern Plantation Owners has gotten old, as has the slavery issue. The war did not start out as a contest of "we're going to free the slaves" vs. "oh no you're not" and I get very tired of seeing it colored that way. There are only so many ways to tell the same story.

I will keep an eye out for the scenes you mentioned, thanks!

Ohh the Irish scene gets me too!! It's soooo incredibly sad.

LOL, mine is long as well...;-)

Well that explains it. I adore Jeff Daniels (an adoration which dates back to Gettysburg, actually), so I was disappointed in the material he was given for G&G.

That whole long comment that was basically a complaint is not to say that I did not like the movie, which I do. A lot! I simply think it is an awful adaptation of the novel.
