A couple teeny real life updates, and a more obvious one:

  • After what seems like a century, I've finally gone and changed my layout. I love my old one still, but it was time for a change, especially with everything in my life so different, I felt it was only fitting to have a fresh look on my LJ as well. ;-) A bright, clean look is what I was aiming for. It's a little summer-y, so we'll see how I feel when the end of the year rolls around. ;-)

  • This Sunday was such an odd day...it actually rained, which is not at all normal for this time of year. Rain is so delightful and I wasn't about to miss such a rare opportunity, so I promptly ran outside and stood in it. ;-P It was so much fun, and I can't remember the last time I took the time to freely embrace the rain rather than run from it, even loving it as I do.

  • I snagged a copy of Amanda Foreman's Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire biography for cheap at a used bookstore (imagine my glee upon beholding it!), so I've been perusing that of late. It's proving a fascinating read so far, and even in the first few chapters I've already learned enough to say that as miscast as I thought Keira Knightley was in The Duchess, apparently Ralph Fiennes was even moreso, since the Duke was only 9 years older than his wife, and not as dark or brooding as Fiennes. They need less grumpy and more languid...I'm thinking Simon Woods might have been a better choice, LOL!

  • Thanks to my brother's generous birthday gift, I've finally read Georgette Heyer! Sprig Muslin was something I'd started while waiting in a bookstore, and wanted to finish, so that made choosing one from her vast selection of Regency romances a lot easier! It was cute, and it's obvious why she's such a natural choice for Austen fans. ;-) Not as good as JA (but then again, who is?), but I'd like to keep reading more of her work.

  • Having fallen in love with Evelina last summer, Fanny Burney's Cecilia and Camilla have joined the ranks of literature on my shelves! Both volumes are, I might add, veritable DOORSTOPS, weighing in at approximately 1,000 pages each! I can't wait to start one but I confess I'm a bit intimidated since it's such a huge undertaking...

Would anyone else be interested in possibly trying to start up another Group Read?

I'm glad you finally gotten into Heyer! Sprig Muslin is pretty fun. I wouldn't really compare her to Austen; they're really very different types of stories, and mostly set among a different level of people. The language style is similar, though, which makes them very pleasant to read. :)

What book were you thinking of for the Group Read? Heyer or Burney?

Date: 2010-07-14 07:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
I couldn't help but compare her to JA; that's the reason I picked up Heyer in the first place. ;-P However, I know that she's not the same and is writing in a totally different era, at the disadvantage of having to do research whereas JA lived it.

I didn't find the style similar at all; Heyer uses way more dialog and shorter sentences. JA has the innate ability to relate an entire conversation without ever giving you any specific speeches. ;-)

Either of the two Burneys.

I'd be interested in a group read of Cecilia - it's been on my re-read list for ages! I'm reading Charlotte Lennox's The Female Quixote which is quite fun but I'm not sure what to make of it exactly...

Nice layout btw!

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was going to say that I am trying to be more active again but I've clearly failed to do that! Lots of RL stuff like moving house, job change etc. getting in the way.

But yes for reading and perplexing reading too. Easy books are all very well and good but they lack the satisfaction of something more demanding.

Hope you're well!

I adore your fresh new layout olde! It`s so gorgeous!!!!!! :D
Damn we are waiting for the rain here so bad! :( The monsoon just isn`r happening and it`s getting people worried .
I haven`t read anything regarding the Duchess of Devonshire but I thoroughly enjoyed Keira`s performance in the film. She and Ralph did a fantastic job and it was quite a good movie in the end :)
Reading ? Gosh it seems like I read my last book years ago :( The last book I read was 'The Remains of the Day' (which was amazing) but now that school`s starting early August it seems like I won`t be able to pick up anything till October :(

Awww, thank you so much V! :-D :-D I'm glad you like it!

I hope you get your rain soon!

The book so far is fascinating; I'd recommend it if you liked the film!

Gah I know what you mean. I haven't been reading much this past year or so at all, but I'm trying to remedy that and read even a teeny bit whenever possible.

Amanda Foreman's Georgiana biography is excellent. I loved that one.
GEORGETTE HEYER?! She's one of my very favorite-est authors! My mom started reading her to me, beginning with "Arabella", when I was like 13. The funnier her books are, the more I like them--Faro's Daughter, The Grand Sophy, and A Convenient Marriage are all particularly hilarious. No, she's not as good as Jane Austen (as you pointed out, who is?) but she's one of the two best 20th-century writers of Regency fiction that I've come across, the other being Sheila Simonson, who in general is not nearly as lighthearted as Heyer.
*much Heyer squeeing*

Now I'm intrigued by AF's Madame du Pompadour bio as well! ;-P

LOL! I've had The Grand Sophy recommended to me many times, so I'll have to look for that one.

I've never heard of Sheila Simonson!

i don't think she's very well known, and i don't know how much she's written. "Cousinly Connexion" is my favorite, but the "Bar Sinister" series is really good too--tho I find aspects of it depressing, probably because it's got a lot more realism about some things than your average romance novel! :P

Date: 2010-07-17 06:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
Well I like depressing so long as it's realistic and not let's-see-how-rotten-we-can-make-so-and-so's-life...ala Tess of the D'Urbervilles, LOL!

omg i HATE that book! worst thing we read in my AP English class. Which means it beat out Camus' "The Stranger", which is not an easy feat. :P

ROTFLOL! I only saw the movie (not sure if I'm willing to tackle Hardy, ha ha) and that was uber depressing...to sum the novel up in three words; Tess' life sucks!

Love, love, love the new layout. Makes me want to steal it!

I still haven't read Heyer, but I have two of her books somewhere in storage. I wouldn't compare to her Austen because Austen lived during the time her books set place. What Heyer does very well is research the time period and write in a tone that makes you think of Austen and makes you feel like you were there.

What book would be on the agenda for a group read?

Date: 2010-07-14 07:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
LOL! You're welcome to -- it's by [livejournal.com profile] riverdale @ [livejournal.com profile] ruemadame. I just changed a whole bunch of things. ;-)

You should give her a try! She's not great literature (or at least this one wasn't), but she did do an excellent job recreating the era. One thing that was very amusing was her use of period slang and expressions.

Either of the Burneys -- Cecilia or Camilla, only because I just got them both and I'm dying to start one of them!! ;-)

From: [identity profile] winterlillies.livejournal.com
I started Heyer once, but put her away because I was getting ready to pack up the apartment to move to Glasgow so I never quite finished her and instead focused on one of the Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe books. You know I belong to a Regency yahoo group and get the daily email subscription for the posts of it, etc. and Heyer is mentioned often and many who have read her first the time aren't happy with the book they picked, but once they pick up The Corinthian they've changed their minds. Somewhere there's a list floating of the best Heyer books-let me see if I can find it for you. :)

I can get my hands on Cecilia ASAP-Camilla would require a bit of hunting since none of the local libraries has them and I'd have to check out the bookstores. I have Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho on my hard drive-I just have to format it for the e-reader. I've been dying to read Radcliffe for a while now so I can't wait to do it.

I loved "Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire" when I read it, and though I saw the movie before I even realized there was a book, I don't know... I was quite happy with it.

Somehow, I'd never heard of Georgette Heyer! I've just this summer read the last of Austen's books (I've been reading them one by one since high school, so this ends an era of my life). But I'm glad to know about her! Maybe I can move on to her now

From: [identity profile] olde-fashioned.livejournal.com
It's quite good so far! I didn't like the movie at all, and reading all the history behind the story is making me dislike it even more for it's historical inaccuracies! LOL!

She's very obscure, which is why I'm pleased Harlequin is republishing her works with very attractive and eye-catching covers. She deserves more attention! Perhaps your local library would have a few copies?

Date: 2010-07-15 01:40 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] golly-loli.livejournal.com
Oh goodness! Harlequin is publishing her books atm? That's a surprize! I guess I ought to quit knocking them for publishing trashy romances, since they're making a genuine effort to expand.

Old, bad habits die hard.

Hello Sweet Lauren!!
Your new layout is very pretty! I hope you are doing well. I'm sorry to say that I have been very, very sick and ended up having a blood transfusion and then a Hysterectomy on the 4th of July weekend!! I'm slowly but surely getting back to my old self and feel pretty good even with a belly full of stitches!! I haven't been on LJ for a while and thought I'd see what was going on here and was happy to see your post!! I hope you are having a nice summer!!! I think I'm going to look up Georgette Heyer Sprig Muslin, since I still can't do too much and can't drive for a while!! Do you think that I would like it??
Give yourself a big hug for me!!
Love,
Lindy

OH no, Lindy! *cries* I'm so sorry -- are you okay? :'( I hope you feel back to your old young self!!! Do please keep me posted on yourself, lest you want me to worry...;-P

Yes, I think you would like Heyer very much! She's very light and fun and sweet. (How's that for sentence structure, ha ha ha...)

I'd say give yourself a hug back, but I don't want you to pull any stitches!!! Stay in bed, make your husband wait on you (your boys too if they're around LOL), and Take Care Of Yourself. :-P
