I've been thinking about this for some time. Would anyone be interested in a sort of "Painting of the Week" series on my blog? I come across a lot of artwork while browsing for icon fodder that other people might enjoy looking at, and it might be fun to post a painting a week, or at least I think so. :-)

[Poll #1295144]

I'm principally interested in the costumes and clothing depicted in the paintings, myself, so obviously this would mean things more akin to Gainsborough rather than Picasso. ;-P But I do enjoy discovering lesser-known historical artists, so I would try to do that as well.

It always nice to discover new paintings. I love the victorian era styles, romantic, impressionistic and similar styles. :)

I agree! I'm not as big on the Impressionists, but I adore the Pre-Raphaelites and most of Sargent's works. :-D

Don't know much about paintings at all so I'd be interested!

I think it would be very interesting. I have pretty much zero knowledge when it comes to art so anything you post will be great! :-)

That's a marvelous idea! :)
I love art, especially the ones used in your icons (pre-raphaelite art, medieval art, art depicting historical costume/fashion, etc)
I'm not surprised most people said yes :)
Of course only do it if you have the time, obviously.

Oooh, now I'm surprised to hear that coming from you!! I would have thought you were an expert. :-)

P.S. You wouldn't be a dear and tell me how to pronounce that first word in "ars gratis artis" now would you, pretty please? *smiles sweetly*

I fully intend to post a lot of lesser-known and more rare pieces, as I know how excited I always am to come across them, and hopefully others will feel the same way. ;-)

LOL! No, I suppose not. But it would hardly do to spam people's flists with unwanted art, now would it? ;-P

You flatter me!

Actually I know very, very little about visual arts which is surprising because my paternal grandparents were both artists- grandfather a painter and restorer and grandmother a scuptor. I think perhaps I rebelled a bit against the sort of expectation from that side of my family that I'd be interested in art. *shrug* I actively avoided art galleries until I was about 18 and so forth. Anyway, I think I'd probably like the sort of paintings you'd be writing about (as opposed to the majority of abstract, modern art which I still don't find attractive), so I'm willing to become more informed! :)

Darn, forgot the pronunciation!

It's pronounced as it sounds:

"arz gratis artis". The "a" in "gratis" is short, as is the "i". "artis" is just like "artist" without the "t". The "a" in "ars" is the "ah" sound you make at the dentist. Maybe roll the "r" in "gratis" a bit. But maximum authenticity, think Italian sounds.

I'm basing this on an English RP pronunciation, but I can't imagine an American viewpoint can be very different!

I don't flatter people. I speak truth as I see it! ;-P lol.

Well that explains it, then. I suppose it was rather foolish of me to presume your classical education and speaking Latin would have gone hand-in-hand with a rudimentary knowledge of art. I guess I learned that lesson!

I'm quite new to the whole art thing myself, so I fear I don't know enough to be actually writing about any paintings, just sharing them. ;-) I wish there was a site one could look up famous paintings (and not so famous) to learn more about them. I was reading the Wiki article about the David painting of Napoleon crossing the Alps the other day. I had no idea there were inscriptions in the rocks at the bottom left corner listing the others who crossed the Alps, Hannibal and Charlemagne. :-D

I could figure out the last two from what I remember of the Latin course we briefly took, but it was that first word that stumped me. LOL, I was afraid of making it sound rather like another unpolite word with a similiar spelling only minus a certain vowel....*halo*

Thank you very much! :-D
