A sad day for America...
While it seems the majority of the country is rejoicing our new president-elect, I cannot help but be saddened at the direction this country is taking. I am saddened that we have just elected an untried and inexperienced man and given him the reins of this country. I am saddened that we as a nation have allowed the politicians and the liberal media to effectively pull the wool over our eyes and project another flawed human being as a god-like figure. I am saddened that we have just elected a president who will sign into law the Freedom of Choice Act which will effectively sign the death warrants of an untold multitude of unborn children. I'm saddened that we have sent the most radical, the most liberal, and potentially the most anti-American person we've ever had run for president to the highest office in the land to take power in January. I am saddened that our politics have degraded and deteriorated to the point that I couldn't even find a decent Biblically-qualified Republican candidate to vote for without compromising half my values.
And most of all? I am saddened that most people are rejoicing at all of this.
Part of me feels like crying. :-(
Pray, people. Even if you don't live here, pray for America, pray for not only our country, but all those around the world that will be affected by our policies and our actions, pray that our enemies aren't tempted to test a new and inexperienced president, pray that none of our rights (especially our first and second ammendment rights) aren't trampled on or even eliminated, and pray that whatever wheels Obama sets into motion that they won't permanantly damage this country or the world. God is still in control no matter if the Democrats or the Republicans are in office, and He can still use people, even the likes of Obama.
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."
~ Proverbs 3:5
What man intends for evil God often turns around and uses for good, so let's pray that this is another example. I don't understand why God let this happen, but He knows much better than me or anyone else, and if He can create all of the universe and everything in it, I think He can be trusted with an election.
The whole campaign everyone talked about Obama being an "inspiration" and about his bringing "new hope" to America in trouble times. Well guess what? Obama is only a man, a flawed, finite, tiny human being, and that's nothing, absolutely nothing compared to what God is. I don't trust polticians, I trust God. I don't put my hope in Obama, I put my hope in God.
"...put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore."
~ Psalm 131:2-3
Obama promises hope and change, but God doesn't change. Politicians come and go, "but the word of our God stands forever." (Isaiah 40:8b)
So take that, Obama!

I'm so devastated I feel as if I am mourning the loss of my nation, my freedom, and my religion. I'm angry that so many of my fellow Catholics voted for this man, and did so with a clear conscience. I'm angry that my family will be forced to pay for abortions that we are so passionately against... and I'm scared to death of Barack Obama.

Once and for all, think for yourselves and do not let your local priest think for you. The Bible is there to be interpreted, and not to be followed blindly. God has indeed given you a brain, so use it. I do not want to be controversial or radical, but you must come to terms with the need for change. This isn't just about the US, but also about the world, and the world has spoken.

I AGREE
All I can do is pray that God will watch over us on this sad day.

You know, I should be upset, but I'm not really...I know that God is in control. And besides, I think the end times are coming soon...so...I dunno. Maybe his election and term will turn more people to Christ.

I'm trying to have that attitude, I really am, but it's not easy.
I think the end times are coming soon...so...I dunno.
They very well might be, but the early Christians thought Nero was the anti-Christ, so...;-P
Maybe his election and term will turn more people to Christ.
That would be wonderful!

I agree but I'm just going to put my trust in the Lord and know that everything will be okay.

That's almost all we can do, at this point. :-/

It's so sad that many are so taken with a mere human being! Politicians are so often portrayed as gods when they are (as you state), in fact, finite, fallible, flawed creatures!
Neither do I put my hope in politicians. I too put my hope in the Lord Jesus Christ! And it's all in His hands!
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6
"The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him..." Lamentations 3:25
I'm going to look up more encouraging verses...
In closing I'd like to thank you so very much for posting this! You have brightened my outlook on this event by reminding me that God is in control and nothing happens without His permission. He allows certain events to occur - whether good or bad - in order to accomplish His good purpose. And that is cause to hope and have faith in.

I'm beginning to think that policitians are almost the worst sort of human being...
I love Proverbs 3:5-6. :-D
If I have made one person feel better with anything that I have said, then I am delighted and honoured!! Thank you for telling me. :-)

I am saddened that our politics have degraded and deteriorated to the point that I couldn't even find a decent Biblically-qualified Republican candidate to vote for without compromising half my values.
I believe that Bush is to blame for all of this. The Republican party has had 8 years to do good for our country and they've done nothing except to send our children, brothers, & sisters to fight these barbaric people who have no qualms when it comes to killing their own. Not only that, the state of our economy is pitiful. People can hardly afford health insurance if they can at all, people are loosing their homes, people can hardly afford to even buy groceries. Imagine how much the low income families must be suffering at the moment?!
It's the holidays and Christmas is coming up, how are the working poor going to afford toys, clothes, and shoes for their children this year?
I know our country has welfare programs and financial aid, but it only goes to a certain extent, which is why we have so many homeless people.
Even our Veterans are on the street, begging for money because they can't work and the Government won't pay them the money they owe them for their service. My Father had to fight and go to the VA offices time and time again in order to get his earned money and it took him months to get it and he's angry. They're just now paying him his disability check.
What have the Republican party done for our Veterans?! Nothing! Which is why people have voted for Barack Obama. They don't want another Bush leading our country.
For me, it's sad to see how low our country has become and unfortunately we didn't have much of a choice/selection this year when it came to electing our future president.

However, I think it is important in America - both candidates emphasized this last night and I thought that was important - that we need to lay aside hatred and try to come together, conservatives and liberals alike and do what we can to help heal the rifts in this country. I mean, even if you aren't happy about Obama's election, can't you admit that this says something about our country and our democracy? That there is hope for equality in this country? Isn't that part of the American dream too? Not discrimination and hate, but a chance for all to let their voices be heard.
The majority of America has spoken and America has been fed up with how things have gone for the last eight years and are hungry for change. And isn't it a good thing that in this country we can make our own choices? Isn't that what freedom's about? America exercised that freedom tonight and even if you aren't pleased with the outcome, isn't it a mark of how strong our country is that we could use that freedom?

My father said something quite interesting while we had lunch: "Most has already been done. There will be a change in the USA. But that is something that McCain could have also done if he were elected". That means that the shadow of George Bush is still too long and has done a lot of harm to the republicans , something we were also discussing in class today.
Still, the republicans have four years to get rid of the shadow of Bush and find a man (or woman, who knows), experienced enough in politics, to lead the Republican Party, and, who knows, maybe the country.
Anyhow, now that you name the abortion thing. Don't kill me, but I'm pro-abortist. It's not my personal choice, because I think I wouldn't be able to endure that traumatic experience, and, as I told you before, I want to have a big family when I grow up. But in cases like those of a man raping a woman, and the woman ending pregnant... Well I do actually believe that abortion should be permitted, because, unless the woman has a strong spirit and decides to raise the child, giving him or her all her love, in most of the cases, the situation is traumatic for both the woman (who will see the child not as born of love, but of evil, and won't take care of him or her) and the child (Who will grow without the love and care of the mother, and may not be mentally stable because of that). Still, there is always the opportunity to give the child in adoption, but I do believe that, in cases like those, the woman should be given the right to choose.
But, anyway, this is my opinion, and I know it isn't the only one, so if anybody here got offended, my apologies because it wasn't my intention

Well... If you see him as radical and liberal... I think you would have a heart attack if you saw the guys I vote for in the elections in my country. Still, everything depends on the point of view a person has...

I voted for Obama, but because I think he represents the lesser of two evils, not because I think he possesses some kind of god-like magnificence. I think his chief strength is in his ability to gather support from and listen to people who are good at their jobs. Noone can be an effective leader all on his own.
Also, a lot of the deification of Obama is, I think, a reaction to 8 years of Bush. Once the shiny glow of getting the hell away from the Bush administration and electing the United States' first black president has faded, people will go back to criticizing the president, and making all kinds of jokes at his expense.

sorry as a lurker I just wanna put this out there.
I am Catholic, yes, but things like this make sometimes make me sad to say I am Catholic.
How could you possibly say this? I was always taught, in being Catholic, that we were supposed to accept others AND their beliefs, just because Obama will be president does not mean that your beliefs must change.
Seriously, come on, I thought we had more integrity then this.
This post makes me want to cry. Honestly. THIS is why it's hard to admit I was raised Catholic and why I question my religion so much. It's hard to be associated with people who think such horrible things.
NO BODY is going to be your perfect canidate, sorry God created us all differently.

How could I possibly say this? I'm simply expressing my feelings, and considering as you yourself claim to believe in accepting "others AND their beliefs" then why won't you grant me the same privilege?

Anyway, I just quoted from G.K. Chesterton's book The Everlasting Man on my LJ. (This book, btw, C.S. Lewis referred to as the best popular defense of the Christian faith he knew of).
It probably expresses my feelings well on the issue of "Carthage" and "Rome".

As for experience, I ask you, who of the candidates have experience being president? It is an on the job learning experience for everyone. There is nothing that can give you that experience except having been in office as president before.
As for prayer, I thought this country was based on the separation of church and state. How does religion play a role in government?

It's very loosely based on Defoe's novel but as I understand it, Defoe's novel spawned a whole genre of Robinson Crusoe knock-offs (of which, The Swiss Family Robinson has got to be my favorite), so this show would just be another in a long tradition of adaptations.

What saddens me is that people are so willing to give up their liberties for a little safety, a little "leadership", a little security...and it all sounds so right to them.
But yes - pray. (And remember that the goal is to win many for heaven - not create heaven on earth, which is impossible for us to do anyway!) Even with woe and strife, "God governs in the affairs of men", and even sparrows do not fall to the ground without his knowing it.

I know, it's terrifying, isn't it?
That's very reassuring. :-) Thank you for reminding me of it!
