It may be viewed here. I'm getting rather excited! (although if the rumours are true and Willoughby does seduce Eliza in the opening scene then I am going to be sorely dissapointed) But I like how this Elinor looks, and I love the idea of adding a duel. *hee*

Does anyone else think that they are trying to make this Marianne look like Kate Winslet in the 1995 S&S? Her hair, etc.? And the velvet dress she wears in the promo photo and the scene with Colonel Brandon and the hawk in this preview is allegedly the same dress Kiera Knightley wears to Pemberley. That actually looks pretty good.... I was a bit nervous about it because I'm so dedicated to the Marianne and Col. Brandon that I know so well, but that trailer put some of my fears to ease, so thanks for posting that!

There _is_ a duel in the book - it's just a one line comment - something that Colonel Brandon says. I didn't believe a friend of mine when he said so, but he pointed the line out to me, so I must believe (even if I don't think I could find it again without reading the whole book :-S )

I was aware of that, but I guess I should have chosen my words more carefully! What I meant was adding a duel into this adaptation, whereas the last one left it out entirely. I eagerly read the discussions over @ Pemberley.com's S&S board as to which method was more "correct" -- the sword or pistols. I see Andrew Davies has chosen swords! More intense, I suppose, than 20 paces and a default. ;-P

oh I definitely am, too, considering Sense and Sensibilty is my favorite movie. The new version has some big shoes to fill. I don't know how it can match up to Alan Rickman's voice.

I am looking forward to the coming year. If nothing else I can look forward to the movies on tv. god that sounds so pathetic.

It's kind of a three-way tie, for me, with the Colin Firth P&P, the Kate Beckinsale Emma, and S&S. :-)

Now Alan Rickman's voice is one thing I hope David Morrissey doesn't compare to. I think AR sounds like he has a cold. *ducks flying tomatoes which are sure to come hurling my way*

I have yet to see the Kate Beckinsale version of Emma. I'm not a huge Gwyneth Paltrow fan, but I loved the version she was in. Probably one of the few times I'll say I liked it better than the book. *gasp* I know. I think I only like the movie because of Jeremy Northam. I happen to swoon whenever AR speaks, but certainly no tomatoes thrown ;)

I don't care for the GP version at all, and my biggest beef with JN was that he was to obviously the hero. There was no suspense, no mystery, no surprise, when Emma married him. It's more of a romcom than the other version, and some people complain about Mark Strong being grumpy, but I think he does an excellent job as Mr. Knightley. :-)

How neat! It touts the writer Andrew Davies. I'm not a person "in the know" so to speak but he was the ("a"?) writer for 95's P&P which is my all-time favorite. That in and of itself is squee-worthy. lol.

It says for DVD release. I'm assuming it will be released to the US as well.

I've got the screenplay/diaries that Emma Thompson wrote for the "other one", so I'm rather attached to that version, but it's exciting that this will be a mini-series.

I hope they don't put that scene in. I don't like the fact that they seem to be replicating the 1995 film; I know they are based on the same novel, but I'd like different adaptations like P&P mini-series vs. the movie.

Not happy about the reusing the costumes, either. Surely they have enough money in their budget to design some new ones!

To say I enjoyed that version is not a standing ovation, since Emma is perhaps my least favorite Jane Austen novel. Austen said 'I have created a heroine I believe only myself will like' and I concur with her, even though I knew few else will (I think I was the only person in my british lit class that didn't ADORE the novel. But I've read it three time and I don't think until the last time i read it I understood why i didn't like it. And yet I'll probably read it again sometime). The movie was lighthearted and funny, though, but I look forward to seeing the other version.

I loved the original P&P movie. I know a lot of people loved the second one more, but it was just far more passionate and emotional than I think what Jane Austen intended. If it was a movie by itself it's be MARVELOUS, but I think if you watched that version first and then read the book you might be confused. I will say the second version was perhaps one of the best movies cinemetographyically (is that a word?) speaking that I've ever seen. Sometimes I will watch it just to watch the cintemetography of it.

I was referring to the recent trio of Jane Austen adaptations by the ITV channel in the UK. They made the newest Mansfield Park, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey that will be shown in conjunction with this new S&S on PBS here in America next year. :-) Does that answer your question?

Yes, he wrote the '95 P&P as well as the Kate Beckinsale Emma (my favourite adaptation) and the newest Northanger Abbey put out by ITV.

Me, too!! And when they're not directly duplicating, they're worried about being accused of it, and they tweak the dialogue just enough to sound different and drive me crazy in the process!! P&P '05 does this to me as well.

Now that I find rather amusing, like the Jane Bennet's yellow dress in P&P '95 that appears on Mrs. Weston in the Kate Beckinsale Emma, and then at the ball in Wives & Daughters... ;-)

David Morrissey (who played Bradley Headstone in Our Mutual Friend) is playing the Colonel. He's not good looking at all.

Emma is my favourite novel, followed very closely by P&P, then NA. MP is my least favourite novel. I like Emma, despite all her (numerous) faults. She learns from her mistakes, and most of the trouble she gets herself into is from a desire to make other people happy and find spouses for them. She is not malicious, or cruel, she's just spoiled and thoughtless sometimes.

By original do you mean the 1940s version or the Colin Firth adaptation? But I agree with you on watching the Kiera Knightley P&P just for the prettiness. ;-)

I'll probably have that problem, too! It took me watching the '05 P&P twice before I started to just love it on its own merits, so I imagine it will be the same with this. =)

I must say, the Fanny Dashwood in that preview sounds almost *exactly* like the original girl - kind of caught me by suprise. She's near the top of my list of "Movie Characters I Love to Hate."

that seems to be the general consenus from my lit class. I just thought she still operated under the same assumptions she began with and didn't change as much as I'd like her to. I don't have a copy hand (meaning within a foot reach) but there's a part at the end when she doesn't exactly wish her friend well with her husband because she's still full with ideas of class distinction and I was bothered she never came to terms and just wished her friend happiness. she did change in other ways, though, it's just been awhile so I may not remember. Maybe thats what I don't like about her - she's spoiled and bratty. Humility is a big thing I value in people, even characters in novels, lol ;)

Oooh - the 1940 version was alright, too, but I don't remember it as well as the CF version so it must have not been too memorable in my subconcious. I do remember laughing at it more than the other versions, although I'm not sure why.... I watched that I think junior year in college so it's been a little while.

I am also very excited - I enjoyed Davies' adaptation of Northanger Abbey this spring. My biggest fear is that they will merely copy the previous film (which is what this year's Persuasion and Mansfield Park did).
