icons: The New World

Well, I decided to go ahead and at least get this one batch off my harddrive before it qualifies for Medicare! I had SUCH a heck of a time working with these caps (which were really hard to come by to begin with), so woefully I couldn't do precisely what I wanted with them. *pouts* ANYway, hopefully these aren't too bad, being a few months old and all... ;-)

This movie is something I highly recommend to three groups of people: 1. fans of gorgeous cinematography, locations/scenery and really authentic costumes, 2. Christian Bale fans (because he plays a really great guy in this), and 3. die-hard travel documentary enthusiasts HA HA HA. I'm only half joking there, because seriously, the first two-thirds of this movie were so boring with little-to-no dialogue besides practically every character soliloquizing, asking (their love interest? the viewer??) "Who are you?" Very pointless IMO, and apparently very Terence Malleck, or so I'm told. ;-P

The movie only really got interesting during the last third or so when it started to develop a plot besides John Smith (who I never liked anyway, as played by the ever-grubby Colin Farrell who I can't stand) and Pocahontas (very aptly performed by the lovely Q'orianka Kilcher whose correctly spelt name is courtesy of IMDb) wandering around staring at each other like a bunch of deer.

Even having said of that, it was well cast, well acted, had a lot of "sweetness" to it, certainly was quite a visual treat, and the costumes really are exquisite! Plus it's not a bad historical take on a subject that has been sadly ruined by other films, novels, and whatnot...anyway, enough of my superfluous commentary -- on to the icons!

I`m not that big a fan of this movie because I found it quite boring in parts and very slow but it certainly was a visual treat and I enjoyed the good acting and score! Plus it was the first time I actually 'took notice' of Christian Bale *sigh*

Secondly WOW! ok, I am just delighted at what you have done with those shots of the film, and the moods you evoke!! I love all of them very much indeed, so I should just typing in all the numbers lol....1, 2, 3, 4, 5................

LOL, I thought I would say that after your comment the other day on my icons, that I had not done many of the hero, I realised that one of the cap folders I used was not full, and a part of the film from the romance, marriage, baby and getting to England were missing!!. I watched it yesterday for the first time, and thought it was just so utterly lovely, I really liked it as a film :-). I have manage to cap the missing shots and will at some point do some more. The caps make so much more sense with the missing ones filled in *rolls eyes*

Reminds me of the little tidbit I learned once: "Yucatan" (as in, the Yucatan Peninsula) is the native word for "what are you saying?"! Can't you just see it?

It's soo good to see icons from you again!!!!

#1 is epic in it's crop texture etc. So scenic! And I love love the text on 3, 34, 45 & 48. The crop on 8 is fab and I love the negative space in 14, 16, 46 & 48 ♥

Speaking of Hayley, she sang again at the Festival of Remembrance this year (gotta love her for supporting such a worthy cause). She sang Dame Vera Lynn's wartime classic "We'll Meet Again" with Dame Vera cheering her on in the audience. I was so excited when I watched her on the TV.

See, that's exactly how I feel, except I was already very aware of who CB was thanks to Batman Begin. ;-D That's what made me first pay any attention to him even though I'd already seen Reign of Fire.

You like the score for TNW?? I watched that movie with few expectations, one of which was getting to hear Hayley Westenra's "Listen to the Wind" at the very LEAST during the endcredits, but it's not even in the frickin' movie!!!! Plus the whole Mozart thing during that era just fried the historical purist side of me. *iz still fuming*

I'm so glad you like the icons, dear! Yours have gotten so wonderful I'm not sure I'm any competition anymore since I've gotten so out of practice. ;-)

If you like period costumes to be authentic and (don't take this the wrong way because they're lovely) -- "dirty" looking, appreciate gorgeous scenery and/or like Christian Bale, then I'd absolutely recommend this to you. ;-) If you do get around to watching it you'll have to be sure to let me know what you think!

ANYway, I'm so glad you like and approve of them! The caps definitely are moody, aren't they? #2 is one of my favourites because of how well it turned out (I had to trash SO many of this batch because the caps were so darn pathetic. Where'd you get yours btw?)

Oh man! That's crappy! At least you can cap it yourself -- I don't have the DVD and I don't plan on wasting any money on it (CB or no hahaha JK) but I really wish I could've found some caps of her dress at the very end scene (with the green one and all the autumnal trees in the background you know?). Not like I need to make more of these or anything...*snort*

I know! One of the reasons I watched it was to hear her song, so you may imagine my ire when I found it wasn't even so much as in the endcredits.....*glares at filmmakers for wasting such incredible talent* AND do you know you can't even buy her song off the soundtrack individually on iTunes?? OH I so mad when I learned that. *goez and YT's it defiantly*

Yay for LotM! What else did you think about it, besides it being sad? And I knooooowwwww, poor Alice and poor Uncas! Sparks galore! (Especially during the waterfall scene when he's trying to calm her, mwahahhaaaaaa.) I'm 110% with you on the whole romance thing between the two of them. It's not in the book (but that's weird anyway and almost a complete waste of time IMNSHO) but I really wanted them to include it. I heard that they'd planned to put it in the film but (14? 16? yo) Jodhi May's mother wouldn't allow it. :-(

Did the version you watched have the Clannad song "I Will Find You" in it?

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. It's cheesy, but to me, this movie is visual poetry. I loved Pocahontas as a kid and subsequently became obsessed, and when I saw The New World in theaters, I went with my best friend, who saw Pocahontas way back when with me, and we both came out in tears because that story had been such a big deal for both of us. I can totally understand why it wouldn't appeal to people, but that doesn't make it any less dear to me. When I went to Jamestown this summer, we were at the actual site of the fort (not the reconstruction) and I was listening to the soundtrack to this on my iPod - it's amazing how much of that swamp land is still there, but how it still retains its dream-like quality.

Long story short, these icons are gorgeous, and I am stealing practically all of them. :D
