Hmmm. I'm going to preface this and everything else that I've said with a big I'm-no-expert-so-I-might-very-well-be-wrong. ;-) But what I would gather from that, is not "sleeveless" but short sleeves, and probably, er, um, lower necklines that are off the shoulders.
See how they're really short, but still there? It's kind of a fine line, but the Madame Recamier one is closest to Caroline's, but this was almost certainly "undress" and not meant to be worn to a ball. ;-)
